Satellite due to 'crash' on Earth - September 23rd 2011, 12:53 PM

Quote:
A defunct Nasa satellite weighing six tonnes is expected to crash to Earth some time on Friday evening, possibly hitting the UK.

Experts are warning that large chunks of it may come down without burning up in the atmosphere. Experts say they will get a more precise idea in the last 12 hours before the satellite is due to return.

The US space agency says the risk to life from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is 1 in 3,200.

Pallab Ghosh reports.

The sky is falling!!!

In all seriousness I'm not worried at all it'll probably go in the ocean.

Sorta scary, but who cares. If it's my time to go, then it is. Anyhow, I could imagine a thousand deaths less badass than being killed by a frickin' satelite from outer frickin' space.

This made me laugh.

But really, if there was a massive risk to civilian life then the government would have taken action to protect us. Not that I trust their judgement or anything, but you know..

I mostly missed the story and where they are planning on it hitting because of school, can't sit and watch the news at school.
I'll just have to wait tomorrow or later tonight to find out
I'm hardly worried it'll hit on land, considering only 1% of land covers the Earth.

Try 29.2% (assuming you actually meant that you think 1% of the Earth is covered by land, worded strangely)...

And it's landed apparently in the sea near Canada - well that's what I heard on the news. So that was excitement over nothing

I was kind of hoping that it would hit my car so I could collect on insurance.
