Very sad story but the writing of this article bothers me. It bothers me that they kept calling him a man, I rarely hear an 18 year old being referred to as a man in the way this article portrayed it. I mean if the girl was 18 would they have called her a woman, instead of a girl. It just seemed like the writer was doing that to get an emotional response and it bothered me.

Not much detail in the article, hardly newsworthy in the grand scheme of things.

Obviously he had some emotional and mental instability going on. It's awful, but what can you do, really. :/

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote,
“Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything.
He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."

There are so many sick people out there. It makes me almost not want to have kids born into this world.

Legally, you become an adult at the age of 18 in the US. The difference between 17 may not seem huge, but they are considered entirely different in the justice system. You become a "woman" at the age of 16, but that's not through a legal process (as far as I know) but simply from having a "sweet 16" birthday.

I have to go to work, but here's something I found on Google quickly:

http://www.wisegeek.com/at-what-age-...-in-the-us.htm

Hopefully that'll clear some things up regarding your concern.

Oh no I know the technical stuff. But I've seen other articles written about guys that age referred to as "young man" or something like that. I just found it weird because the guy is still a high school student, and I feel they were using the term for an emotional effect and that bothered me.

It's the media -- I think, by default, every news media is manipulated for a more emotional effect. Otherwise, only old people with Anti-Obama stickers on their Porsche Cayennes would be watching that shit. With power comes corruption, so the man didn't really stand a chance. Many men and women are raped on a daily basis, but once one of those stories gets on the news...the criminal is dealing with more shit than what is necessary for justice. It's not right for the media to do that, but it's practically humanly rational for the media to do something like that.

Are you sure he was a student? I couldn't find any part of the story which said he was (though I could have missed it). My assumption was that he was not a student which is why they used the word 'man'.

It's awful regardless. I really wish there was more education for students about abusive relationships because this probably wasn't the first time he had been violent with her.

Well he's only 18, other students knew that the two had a dating relationship, and she was killed during lunch break so unless that school has some crappy security, or just lets random people on campus during school hours, I have to assume he was a student.

Seriously. Get some therapy. Some pretty hardcore therapy. And sharpish.

I'm not sure why his comment makes him worthy of therapy. I mean it really isn't that "newsworthy". Sad and horrible, yes. Newsworthy, no.

If every single murder was reported in the news we'd be overloaded.
