Smarties "Smokers" Stressing Schools - March 20th 2009, 11:34 PM

Article

Quote:
(Newser) – Parents and school officials are sweating over a new kids’ craze: “smoking” Smarties candies, the Wall Street Journal reports. Children crush the sugary discs into a powder in their wrapper, dump the powder into their mouths, and, in a move eerily reminiscent of cigarette smokers, exhale a cloud of dust. “To freak your mom out, sit behind a chair and just blow smoke up in the air,” instructs one online commentator.
Like the Mentos-Diet Coke fad before it, this one is becoming a viral phenomenon. “It has come to our attention that some of our students are involved in something that is known as 'smoking Smarties,’” one principal wrote to parents, saying the fad could be “hazardous to your son or daughter's health." A doctor says the practice could lead to sinus infections, and, though it's a long shot, the possibility of maggots feasting on sugary residue inside the nose.

I have to say that I remember this going on when I was in elementary school. I guess people are late on the fad. I never did it however, I thought it looked stupid.

That sounds disgusting. Candy cigs are so much better.

I completely agree! I love Candy Cigarettes.

And really, it is disgusting, but it's probably just another one of those annoying things that is seen as cool, but it will be seen as stupid in a few years. People, though.. they come up with the dumbest things.

That is really quite disturbing, I hadn't heard of it before now.

I love smarties. I'd rather eat them than crush them up and make smoke out of them.

I don't even understand how that would work...
But it's 1 am, and I can't sleep, that could be the reason.
Its a weird phase. And candy cigs... my friends and I used to light those. I just liked the melting sugary goodness xD

If you click the link to the article, there is a video from Youtube explaining this.

I personally also think it is a waste of candy.

I don't see the point myself, I'd rather eat them then waste my time crushing them up just to smoke them but like any other fad, it'll die out soon.

I used to do that... not with candy but different prolonged cookies & similar. Though there was never a fad like that here...

Quick! Ban smarties! Ignore the real problem of trouble home life and parents who don't take part in their children's lives and go for the quick solution!

I don't really see anything wrong with it. Would the parents rather they were smoking actual cigrettes? Pfft. Just let kids be kids, they'll soon get bored of it when another craze comes along.

Completely agreed.
Why is this even worth sweating about?
It's candy, (and a waste of good smarties at that) let them be kids and do what they want with them.
The doctor should also have mentioned that by long shot he means a one in one million chance so the parents wouldn't have to worry about this dreaded issue

I have to ask... those smarties in the video don't look like what I call smarties.
Are they different in the US?

This is what I think of when I hear Smarties. These were also what kids "smoked" when I was in elementary school.

That's why I didn't understand... our smarties are like M&Ms.
Thanks for clearing that up, but now I get how you can 'smoke' them.

I don't think there's any harm in it, I'm pretty sure we did similar things when we were younger. We had those candy stick thingies...

Basically it is crushed and made into powder. It's blown back out your mouth or nose. That's basically it. It's probably more of an annoyance at school than a health risk.

back in the early to mid 2000s, we used to take those bubble gum sticks...i think they were called jo-blo...anyway, you could suck the sugar out of the little tube and blow it like smoke. no maggots are feasting on my nasal cavaties, at least not because of that.

I think it's just so the school staff and parents don't have to deal with the annoyance.
If they make up risks and blow statistics out of proportion they can make it look dangerous and have some sort of backup when they tell them to stop.

Wow. Stupid. Are we REALLY going to complain about something as harmless as this? (Not us, but adults & such.)

At my school, the music department goes out to Friendly's after every concert, and we do sugar shots - AKA, taking the packets of sugar and downing them like shots.

But, last time we went out and we were doing the shots, and one of the girls in my choir class was sitting with some other people along with her mother. Her mother came up to our table and told us to stop because it was setting a bad example for the student body of our high school.

... REALLY. IT'S SUGAR. WE'RE EATING IT.

That's my story association for the day.

when you love and laugh abundantly you live a beautiful life.
