A 14-year-old Florida student who hugged his friend was suspended as a result of his middle school's zero-tolerance no-hugging policy, WKMG-TV reported Thursday. Nick Martinez said he gave a quick hug to his best friend, a female student, between classes.
The public display of affection was spotted by the principal of Palm Bay's Southwest Middle School, 74 miles (120km) southeast of Orlando. While the principal told WKMG-TV he believed the hug was innocent, he brought the two students to the school's dean, who penalized them with in-school suspensions.
According to the Southwest Middle School's student handbook, students can receive a one-day out-of-school suspension for kissing, while students caught hugging or hand-holding are penalized with a dean's detention or suspension.
The school's strict policy stipulates that there is no difference between an unwanted hug, or sexual harassment, and a hug between friends, WKMG-TV reported.
"A lot of friends are hugging. I just happened to be the one caught doing it," Nick said. "Honestly, I didn't know because I didn't think hugging was a bad thing. I didn't know you could get suspended for it."
Nick's mother, Nancy Crecente, said she plans to ask the school board to change the policy.

I find it sad that this particular school is discouraging a positive sign of affection. It's lazy of the school not to look at things on a case by case basis. I would hope that the student's mother and other parents fight hard to change this policy.

What really gets me about these stories is not that the school puts these dumb policies in place, but that they put them in place EVEN when schools show up in the news again and again and again for having similarly moronic policies.

Bullying is hard issue for schools to deal with, even schools this moronic. However, I can only imagine their penalty for bullying would be tossing the students into a pit full of cannibals. Cheating on a test means instant death by firing squad. Kissing results in chopping off the lips of the students involved. Talking back or swearing to teachers means decapitation. I wonder though if they solve bullying by having these ridiculous rules so students would be too afraid to bully?

I've always thought schools want to keep a positive public image. Perhaps these ridiculous rules make the minority of parents happy who dislike public displays of affection. I would like to believe the majority of parents aren't like that, otherwise the school's community is fucked. To me, it shows the school is lazy because they'd rather issue the penalties rather than consider the issues on a case-by-case basis.

I find the rule for kissing and hugging funny because it stated the penalty must be issued by the dean. If that's the case, then the principal may have no authority according to the rule book so he simply becomes someone who snoops around. The principal is also funny because he's trying to save his ass by stating he thought the dean wouldn't penalize the students. If that's the case, then why bring them to the dean in the first place? Just give the students a small warning at the most. Incompetent.

Unless a condom is worn underneath the clothing, then it's 99.9%. If the female in question is on birth control, then it's 94.7%. Please include all the facts about hugging in the future.

Hugging is the leading cause in teen pregnancy. We shouldn't be trying to get abortion instated, but get hugging banned instead. Prevention is the best method.

We have a new principal this year too. The one we had last year cancelled homecoming. At first he was like "No grinding, no this type of dance, don't do this, don't do this, oh you can do this but not this," and then he just cancelled it and refunded everyone's money.

That would be the worst home-coming dance party. For our high-school graduation, the teachers at first told us pretty much what your principal said. However, once we started doing it, the teachers didn't give a shit, they also started dancing. Two of the teachers also started grinding but the others just danced normally. At least you got your money back.

How is there no difference between an unwanted hug and a hug between friends? I think if one person in the hug is showing signs of not wanted to be hugged for example, pulling away rather then hugging them back, then it's pretty obvious it's an unwanted hug. What an ridiculous reason to base a policy on.

I actually live right near Southwest Middle School. I know many people that attended it. And I don't know the full story because I'm not going to read the article, but basing this opinion on things they don't tell you in news stories, I could kind of understand this kind of policy at that particular school. I had the same policy at my middle school, Central, which is the same county. Southwest Middle School is one of the worst schools around here, when students from the other schools attend an event there they rush them directly from the bus to wherever they're going to be. Parents aren't allowed to drive the kids because they want every student attending the event to be accounted for with basically body guards at all times. It's that bad. Now, I don't agree with suspending a kid for just hugging someone. I'd say at most some sort of minor detention.
