Sylvia Plath's Son Commits Suicide - March 24th 2009, 01:48 AM

Article

I find this very sad. I love Sylvia Plath poetry. The way she died and the circumstances behind it have always sadden me. However, she did become famous because of her death. I doubt any of her works would have been published had she lived. I guess it is true that you have to die to be famous in some cases.

I saw the headliner this afternoon and I was absolutely shocked, considering the circumstances.

Sylvia Plath was an amazing writer, even though I disliked The Bell Jar. She had so much potential. She was actually about to publish the sequel to The Bell Jar, when her husband cheated on her and she burned the only copy. My condolences go out to the rest of their family.

Didn't do it to gain power or money if I recall,
It's to give; I guess I'll pass it on

I read that in the news today, too. I wanted to blog about it but I felt like I just need to think about it quietly. It makes me wonder, in the most morbid of ways, about the heredity of psychological illness.

I am analyzing one of her poems "Sting" for my english class. There is too much suicide in that family. I hate her husband... with a passion.

This is so sad

I loved The Bell Jar, actually. I actually reread pieces of it immediately because it was so good. I plan on reading it again one day.

This really does make me wonder about mental illnesses within families. It also makes me wonder what Ted Hughes was like. Both of his wives killed themselves. I know that doesn't mean anything, but what are the chances of that?

Heh, pretty white boy syndrome strikes again. Plenty of people kill themselves but instead we ignore most of those and turn our attention to some family where depression appears to run. He took the easy way out so no sympathy for him.

Her poem, "mirror" is one of my favourite poems. This is really sad to hear about her son. :[

Exactly (assuming I'd actually stoop that low).

Just because it's in the news or it's a celebrity means you shouldn't feel anything for them?
I like some of Sylvia Plath's work, although I didn't really like The Bell Jar that much, I might try reading it again, it's been a couple years since I did the first time.
Death is always unfortunate, no matter how or who it happens to, you shouldn't try to play it down just because you didn't know the person.

I loved The Bell Jar too. It wasn't really a masterful work of literature IMO, but it made me think. The perspective she brought to it was so insane that I just kept asking What made her think like that??

I wondered about that too. Maybe he was attracted to the tragic manic-depressive type?

My dentist's neighbor died and I felt just as sad for him as I do for Sylvia Plath's son. I didn't personally know either of them, but it just sucks that people end their own lives before they find happiness.

I love Sylvia Plath and her works. Maybe because of the way she lived and ended her life. But this is just bizarre.
