I'm the first to admit that I disagreed vehemently with a lot of what he said, particularly about religion (on which I felt at times he completely lost the plot). However, having read his obituary I cannot fault his determination or his skill as a writer, and if nothing else he has challenged me to bolster my own opinions on a range of topics.
