North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has died at the age of 69, state-run television has announced.

His death was announced in an emotional statement read out on national television.

The announcer, wearing black, said he had died on Saturday of physical and mental over-work.

The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Seoul says his death will cause huge shock waves across North Korea.

Kim Jong-il has been the leader of the impoverished communist country since the death of his father Kim Il-sung in 1994.

He suffered a stroke in 2008 and was absent from public view for several months.

His designated successor is believed to be his third son, Kim Jong-woon, who is thought to be in his late 20s.

My reaction to this is limited only to concern for the wider stability of the region - as his death was by all accounts unexpected and his son still being groomed as his successor, this could open up into a power struggle in an already volatile country. That does not bode well on any level, and I'm not surprised that many nations are now on alert after this.

I just hope his son doesn't try to act like his not a push over and act like a total ass.

There is no New World Order, it's a popular conspiracy among the stupid and idiotic, however. Spreading Democracy among oppressed people like in Libya and the Middle East is a pretty poor way to consolidate the world under one government. Why would the Illuminati, an organization about Liberalism (the advancement of personal freedom) want to kill people and take over the world? It's a ridiculous theory and nothing more. There's also no proof of any of it, just ramblings of the idiotic.

You're in the Debates forum. You can't state a completely illogical, unfounded and ridiculous idea such as that (That actually given a heartattack by the Illuminati as part of their plan for world domination via the spread of democracy and liberty), provide no defense for it and expect everyone to be completely fine with it. It's actually, as much as I hated the man in life, a bit insulting to his memory that you'd say something like that.

Then there's the fact that I genuinely wasn't sure if you were joking or not, and in that sense I didn't actually mean any offense, I simply couldn't tell if you were being serious or making a joke. I suppose you could liken it to Poe's Law. So for that, if I offended you, I apologise.

Seems strange that so many leaders are talking about North Korea weakening or even collapsing. This is a father-to-son transfer of power, and I very highly doubt that anything at all will be changed in North Korea.
