What do people think about School Uniforms - March 30th 2009, 10:51 PM

Are students for or agains school uniforms? My school had a pretty big argument about school unforms. Some of them said they were all for it. Others say they were totally against it. What do you think?
For
or
Against?

I'm for it completely.
It means I don't have to worry about what i'm wearing everyday
However, I think some rules are just ridiculous, our school measures the height of your heels (they must be under 3 inches) and you have to have your hair tied back at all times and the hair band may only be navy blue or pink. I think that's going a bit far :/

School uniforms have been shown to increase student productivity, so I guess they're a good thing. Plus they train you to not expect to wear what you would like to wear when you have a job.

Over all I think they're a good thing.

Re: What do people think about School Uniforms - March 30th 2009, 10:55 PM

I'm not really sure whether or not I'm for or against school uniforms. I've gone to a school where I had to wear a uniform before and it really wasn't that big of a deal to me. I definitely think that uniforms are a good thing because it eliminates the possibility of someone being made fun of for not having designer clothes and things like that, but I also think that if a school requires the uniform and it's a public school, the uniforms shouldn't have to be paid for by the student or student's parents. However, if it's a private or religious school, I definitely think that it's necessary that they student and their parents are responsible for buying the uniform. And that's because those students had the option of going to a normal public school, but chose to go to the private or religious school, so they should pay for their own uniforms.

I can see the objective benefits of a school uniform, but I prefer a lax uniform, or a well designed dress code. Like, business casual-- school version. That's what I wear to school anyway.

Did I miss the part about where school uniforms are triggering? Just because a debate may be controversial does not mean that it needs to be labeled triggering.

I am for it.

I'm against school uniforms.

I personally think there are enough restrictions placed on today's youth. School is already filled with rules and now they want to control what we wear? The dress code is strict enough. If you have on uniforms, you also have no sense of individuality. Clothes make the man. If he's the same as everyone else, that tells you basically nothing about his personality.

By wearing uniforms, you most likely have ones that are very, very modest. If you are too modest, I think people don't become comfortable with their bodies. That makes it seem like showing a little skin is wrong. I don't mean come to school in your underwear, but there are shirts for girls that are tasteful. You can't spend your life being covered up. If people didn't make such a big deal of it now, then we wouldn't have problems with what you could wear to school and what you can't.

I can't even imagine school uniforms in my school. Everyone seems to thrive on the creativity of the individual, and it really says a lot about a person by how they dress. I haven't seen anyone made fun of for their clothes, and I doubt I will any time soon. There is such a variety between what everyone wears, and it's nice to have that. It gives school more of a comfortable atmosphere.
And I don't see how clothes can make a person more productive. It's not like other clothes hinder people from reading and writing. I have yet to see that.

Completely for.

I've probably written about 5 essays on it, so in terms of arguments, I've done it too many times. But I am for it.

Re: What do people think about School Uniforms - March 31st 2009, 03:02 AM

I'm definitely for school uniform.

Whenever we have a non-uniform day at school it's like a freakin fashion parade, with everyone trying to out do eachother, its ridiculous. having a uniform is so much easier, you don't have to get up each day and think "oh gosh, what am i going to wear?"

also, it puts everyone on the same level, and people aren't going to be looked down upon for something that they are or are not wearing.

i think it makes you work harder when you have a uniform on also, i don't really know why, but it does seem to.

pretty much every single school in the UK has a uniform anyway, so its less of a debate here than it is in the US, because uniform is the norm here. sure, a few people complain about it, but when it comes down to it, i think most people would agree that having a uniform isn't all that bad.

I'm for school uniform - the key is in the name "uniform" similar to homogeneous. It means people won't be bullied for what they wear or having to choose what to wear although among my friends this was not a problem.

The only change I would like to see is a better designed uniform when it comes to airflow - a loose uniform will allow air to circulate which causes more cooling

I'm not for school uniforms.

I show off a lot of my personality through clothes. As do many others. Wearing clothes I like, that are comfortable for me, makes my self-esteem feel better, as it does with many of my friends.

And really, I'm not skinny by any means, and I would go to bet many people would be upset at sizes - I have a lot of trouble finding clothes just my size, and I really don't need a uniform at school to remind me of how fat I am.

On top of that, if you want to say that it turns in to a fashion war, what about the 'real world'? I don't believe the school should be pretending things are perfect outside, because too many people believe that. You will not be wearing the same exact uniform for the rest of your life. I know if my friends were getting bullied - or even someone I didn't know very well - for the clothes they wore, I'd lend them clothes if mine fit them. And I know various other people who would do the same.

I'm pretty neutral on the idea. I'm not in public schools anymore so it wouldn't affect me one way or another but if we had gotten uniforms while I was in high school, it wouldn't have bothered me. I can see both sides to the argument and I think a personality is what shines through, not someones clothes. There are ways of being unique regardless if you are wearing a uniform.

Re: What do people think about School Uniforms - March 31st 2009, 04:10 AM

The cost of clothing is high and I don't think the kids should be so materialistic. Uniforms can be cheap depending on the style. If it's Catholic school uniforms, no. If it's the public school uniforms of French Toast, they are moderately priced.

At the end of the day, the school's goal is to teach. It shouldn't be what a kid is wearing or not wearing or who has the latest fashion. It could also cut down on gang symbols and bullying.

I know I would've hated it if they brought in uniforms so I think they should gradually introduce uniforms. Such as make it so grade schools are in uniform and after two years go to middle school. Then incorporate the underclass into uniforms and let the upper class go. Then as the underclass moves up in ranks, keep the uniforms.

It sucks, but schools shouldn't be a free-all for students and students don't obey the dress code.

Part of the reason why I would've hated it is because I was in school half the time other kids were in school.

I wore a uniform for 9 years at school, I didn't concentrate one bit. Honestly, I slept threw most of my classes. I doubt this would have changed any if I hadn't worn a uniform. So I don't see how they say that uniforms improve productivity. It just seems like a good way to punish kids. example:

Me and a friend were in the lunch room, there is a tray on the table besides us as we pass it a teacher comes over to my friend.

"Patrick! Take your tray up."
Him: "Not mine."
Her: "Well, take it up anyway."
Him: "Umm.... let me think about that one, no."
Her: "I told you to take it up!"
Him: "Its not my tray, and its your job to supervise so you should have watched whoever did leave it there."
Her: "...." -40 sec later "Your getting a detention!"
Him: "For what!?"
Her: "Not having your shirt tucked in."

I mean, it's just another thing to control the students, I think they are a bad idea. Especially if you have to buy all the cloths from the school.

Uniforms promote conformity, and go against the aspects of creativity and ingenuity. Therefore, I think they're a bad idea. Yes, some kids will be picked on for what they're wearing, but over all, I think that the negative effects the uniforms could have outweigh the positive.

A uniform, in my experience, cannot prevent bullying for what people wear - when your parents are very... old fashioned and you cannot rebel against them, and they choose your shoes, and make you wear hand knitted jumpers... that was my experience, and, yes, I was bullied for that - and other reasons.

I support wearing uniforms as there is now no longer any issues over judging by clothes, no need to see someone dressed like a hobo.

So what about outside of high schools or uniformed colleges/universities? There are plenty of rules, both in one's work area and laws for society. By your idea, people shouldn't wear uniforms to work, just go in torn jeans, have the company walk in with a "FUCK YOU" shirt and Devil Driver hat? Please, the rules alone aren't unreasonable and we have plenty of freedoms.

Wearing uniforms makes one able to judge someone from their personality instead looking at their clothing. I could look at someone dressed in a nice suit, and since they "make the man", the suit could suggest they're powerful, happy, and intelligent, when they're a weak, sniveling, depression moron.

Tell me, do you believe in judging a book by its cover?

i think our uniform is nice as far as uniforms go and i think its a good idea. it holds back rich kids from flaunting their wealth and it somewhat cuts down on other girls dressing very badly.. i never have to stress out about what im wearing or anything either.

...on the other hand our old principal was pretty obsessed with perfect uniform so some people got sent home for having the wrong socks etc which is a little unnecessary lol

I know there are the arguments against individuality, but it can be argued that it can give one a sense of entitlement as well.

Personally, I liked it, because I didn't have to worry about buying clothes or thinking what I would have to wear in the morning.

There's too much judgment over class issues over certain type of clothing makes you poor or rich, especially in high school, where I've found many people to be stereotypical about clothing. It's better to set a standard of equality.

I don't have a problem with school uniforms in private schools, but in regards to public school I do not like the idea of being forced to wear certain clothes. you pay taxes to go to a public school, and the state should not force you to wear their uniform. For a society which values diversity, I find it in consistent that they would hold school uniforms in public schools as well. And I think its good for people to be able to express themselves with how they dress. I think its easier to make friends this way if you are in a new school, like if you see a group that dresses like you etc.. its easier to fit in I think, but when you have uniforms you really don't know what people are like until you meet them.

Re: What do people think about School Uniforms - March 31st 2009, 05:30 PM

Hated them both times I had to wear them. At my elementary school it was bad because the girls' uniform was a heavy jumper with a white short sleeved blouse with a very large collar underneath. We could wear shorts under our jumpers but not pants so in the winter we froze and in the summer we cooked because the jumpers were so hot. The boys had the option of long and short sleeved shirts and shorts or pants. The second time it was more gender uniform. Girls could wear pants or shorts or jumpers or skirts but they had to be your khaki uniform stuff. We had to wear polo shirts of assorted colors. Then it got cray, only white socks, no shoes with black soles because they scuffed the floor, black or brown leather belts only and you HAD to wear a belt if you had belt loops. Boys weren't allowed to wear their hair below their ears and no dying of any sort. And you could only wear one pair of earrings no matter how many holes you had, so obviously no facial piercings. Needless to say I'm no uniform supporter. I mean the argument about not being worried about what to wear is a little dumb. I mean there are no uniforms in college and not that many jobs that require uniforms, so what do expect to do when you get out into life?

I'm for school uniforms, if everyone wore their 'normal' clothes it could lead to bullying - i have several friends who don't exactly follow convetional fashion rules, and if their wore their normal clothes to school, people would comment, to say the least. and we'd also get a load of girls turning up in completely slutty clothes every day, without fail.

however, i do think that ome schools (such as mine) could be a little more lax wiht their rules about uniform. such as with the rule about asking the teachers permission to remove your sweatshirt.

I've worn school uniforms all my life and I honestly think they're great.

I'd hate to have to pick an outfit everyday.

Non-uniform days at my school are like fashion shows.

Re: What do people think about School Uniforms - March 31st 2009, 08:03 PM

Our school is one of two or three other secondary schools in South Dublin that don't have a uniform ~ 1st-3rd years have a blue hoodie, but that's it, so we can wear what we want. Sometimes I think I'd like to have a uniform, if only to save the bother of deciding what to wear every morning, but then i remind myself how horrible they would be if our school were to bring them in ~ the shapeless messes that the poor 1st 2nd and 3rd years have to wear are bad enough.
So I'm kinda happy without one.

It might sound strange but I've always wanted a full uniform, you know, the whole blazer and tie combo. At my school we only ever had to wear black trousers, black shoes and the school jumper. I actually miss my school jumper. It was so comfy and I'd had it since I joined the school in year 7. We'd gone through some tough times together but such good memories in it too I don't mind uniform. I think it helps to keep people equal, and I really like how people who cannot afford to buy the uniform are provided with one. Having said that I do think they should be given one in better condition. At our school you could always tell who had theirs provided for them.

If you don't like the rules at the working place, don't work there. A lot of people don't have an option as to where they go to school. I personally try not to judge a book by its cover. Whenever I have, I've always been surprised at what the person is actually like.

Completely against.
In primary school, we didn't have uniforms and I enjoyed it.
In secondary school, we did have uniforms and I hated it.
In college, I don't have a uniform and I'm enjoying it.

In secondary school, the only thing uniform about us wearing a uniform was that the entire school, including a lot of the staff, were strongly against it. The time that was wasted on assemblies and debates about the uniform would have been better spent in the classroom.

Another reason I'm strongly against it is that teachers don't have to wear the same damn uniform. They get a dress code, but as long as it's suitable for being in around minors and isn't too flamboyant, they can wear whatever the hell they want.

The key point the school made was that it was to show that we're all a part of that school and we're proud to be there. When I raised the point that if that is the case, teachers should also wear the same uniform else it's saying that they're not proud to be part of the school, I was told to shut up.

Great values they instil in the minds of impressionable teenagers.

I think it depends, both on what the uniform is, and in what type of school you're in. Having a dress code is fine. Having a rule like, say, you can't go to school only wearing a thong and a bikini top. In a private school, I think a full uniform is fine, but in public school, enforcing it is wrong. It is ensured that if you're going to a public school, your family can afford the expenses that go along with buying you your school wardrobe, separate from your every day, outside-of-school wardrobe. It's only families with a) enough money, or b) who can get scholarships or other funding, who can send their children to private schools. However, public schools can't guarantee this. Not every family can afford to provide their children with an entire extra wardrobe for school. If the government were willing to provide all your uniforms free of charge, I might consider it appropriate to have uniforms in public schools. But if parents are expected to pay for the costs of dressing their children in a certain manner, they should be restricted to private schools, where it can be assured that every family can cope with the cost.

then they will not care how devout you have been,
but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by.
If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them.
If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life
that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."

I'm neutral. I have nothing against school uniforms, but I'm not sure if I would want to wear it. School uniforms does not allow students to be individuals and pick what they want to wear. On the other hand, uniforms prevent students from being bullied and/or it could definitely save money for many families. For me, it would really depend on what kind of uniform I'd have to wear.

Re: What do people think about School Uniforms - April 1st 2009, 08:45 PM

I'm for it, personally, though it really depends on the situation. I think ALL schools should have a dress code at the least, for decency and courtesy sake. My school requires us to wear a mid-calf length grey plaid skirt, then we have a choice between six different colored polo shirts. Suprisingly... nobody complains after the first week of their freshmen year. The plaid isn't too bold - it's mainly grey with thin stripes of navy and maroon.

I guess the main part about having a uniform is making it so that you can still express your individuality within it. We are forced to wear the skirt & polo (as well as our school ID on a lanyard), but we have the choice of six colors. We're also encouraged to wear tank tops underneath our shirts, and we can wear most shoes and accessorize with jewelry & such. There ARE a few rules - no unnatural hair colors, facial piercings (besides nose), no backless shoes or ridiculous boots (for safety purposes), no non-school-logo jackets, and absolutely NO hoodies. (That last one was getting to be an issue with kids stealing food and texting during classes.) But it's pretty lax compared to my old Catholic schools.

All the schools in my city adopted a uniform this year because there was such a problem with gang violence. My city is fairly poor, but the uniforms consist of pieces that can be bought in most local stores, such as black/navy/khaki pants and polo shirts.

I'm for school uniforms as long as they still allow you to accessorize in a way to maintain some of your individuality. Sometimes they are absolutely needed, but other times a simple dress code will be fine.

when you love and laugh abundantly you live a beautiful life.
