"Rap Is The New Techno" - April 1st 2009, 02:16 AM

I've always hated rap. I thought about it and thought.. Hmmm... Rap has changed. I wondered... Why do some songs win favor with people so easily?

Because rap has turned into techno. Which I'm a little upset about. I've always been a fan of EuroTrance, your top techno and dance artists and djs. Rap artists are using elements of "techno" for their songs. I personally hate rap, and the only songs I do like are techno-like. I'll listen to a rap song on the radio and I'll like it... and I'll think "Oh my god, why do I like this?" Ha ha. Because I love trance/techno.

Your thoughts on the change rap has taken over the years?

Pounding bass and incomprehensible lyrics have long been part of both rap and techno. I wouldn't stick to a genre though, song by song is the best way to do things.

I've never been one to follow genres.
I don't care what they call it. It still sounds like shit

I've always hated rap and still do hate rap. The only 1 rap artists/band that I could bear to listen to but only for a few songs is Insane Clown Posse (ICP), however, after a while, I cant stand them any longer. The main reason I like this is I can, for the songs I like, understand what they're saying without some over-powering bass or other stupid background sound, and it's not about the same usual crap of drugs, sex, violence, etc... . To me, it's making a parody of rap yet still having some skill.

Techno falls under the same umbrella. There are a few bands I like that use dj-like stuff, such as Rob Zombie, however, he is able to combine general head-banging with only a little dj stuff and not be too incomprehensible and have variety. I don't consider him techno by any stretch of the imagination.

Rap? It's always been really diverse. It's more a question of what style of rap is most popular in a particular place at a particular time. The most recent era was that "Fiddy Cent" In Da Club trash that's been flooding the East Coast for about five years? Ten? Something like that. But there are always talented rappers out there doing some good work, from Wyclef Jean and Matisyahu to Classified to A Tribe Called Quest.
Techno is the same. There's a lot of Dance trash, but also some pretty sweet D&B, psychedelic, goa etc.
There's always a wide range of quality in a genre, from awesome to junk.

Eh, rap has lost some if its touch over the years. Many artists only rap about which girl they had sex with the night before or how much money they have.

I don't even count rap as music. However, there is a very, very small number of rap songs that I consider to be alright in the correct context. The hip-hop music from movies like Step Up and Stomp The Yard is fitting and goes well with the choreography. Other than that, no. Rap is awful. Techno... take it or leave it.

Right on! He rocks my world, musically and spiritually.

Seriously, though, there's a lot of good rap still out there, it's just not the most popular kind right now. There's just as much socially-aware, funk/jazz-inspired, cleverly-worded rap as there has been in the past 20 years, you just have to dig through more "bitches and hos" to get to it.

OH, and I forgot to mention "I'm on a Boat" The Lonely Island ft. T-Pain. Destined to become a classic.

You're probably right although I'd only use good within the context of the genre, the bad news is that all genres are judged on the mainstream records like the indie crap is giving rock a bad name. The good news is that sometimes it forks into a sub-genre

There are quite a number of males (rap listeners or not) that talk about having sex, and flaunting off their money. It's what the world has is now, and people like music that relate to their lives.

Pop music in general is streaming very much to lots of bass and snare stuff, along with lots of mainstream hip-hop and R&B. It gets people out to the clubs. The lyrical content is really lacking, in my opinion in most songs. I don't really listen to much of the current rap, so I really couldn't make a fair judgment on how "techno" it has become.

Rap is one of the most impressive genres in existance, in how much it's changed, evolved and grown since it's beginning. I definitely think there is a lot of rap that is being made solely to be sold as ring tones, but that is just the mainstream version of rap; the genre goes so much deeper than that and there are TONS of intelligent and innovative rappers/groups.

Saying rap isn't music? please. If you're saying that, you seriously need to reevaluate what you think constitutes "music".

Never said rap wasn't music. I just said I didn't like it.

I'm one of the few people who still enjoys Hip-Hop. A LOT of people have given up on it which hinders the chances of people getting into for the first time...

Tell me, how many people around the world are guzzling down bottles of Cristal and having sex with tons of women at one time? Not most people, that's for sure.

I don't mind some rappers, though and do find a few rap songs to be great.

if you're implying that all rap songs are about this, you are making a huge generalization based off of a small percentage of rap songs.

No, I'm not making a generalization with that statement. I was asking the poster a question, regarding his/her statement.

Again, I think much of rap has lost its appeal due to many of the things I have already mentioned. On the other hand, there are still rap artists whom I have the highest respect for.

I do think that I over exaggerated, but people at house parties would drink Cristal if they could afford it . My point was that people have sex, and drink alcohol, which is the basis of which many popular rap songs are about. So people like listening to songs about sex, drugs and alcohol, and playing it at their parties, etc. It wouldn't be so popular if people didn't like the partying culture it brought on.

But yeah, rap has gone South for lyrical content!
