Michigan is insane! - April 1st 2009, 11:27 PM

http://www.jconline.com/article/2009...EWS09/90401019

(dont think there's been a post about this >.>)

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The West Michigan Whitecaps say they have no plans to put a warning label on an enormous new hamburger they’re selling this season — despite a vegan advocacy group’s request to do just that.

Susan Levin, a staff dietitian for the Washington-based Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, sent a letter to the Grand Rapids minor-league team on Tuesday. She’s asking that the XXXX-calorie burger be labeled a “dietary disaster” that increases the risk of cancer and heart disease.

The X-pound, $20 burger features five beef patties, five slices of cheese, nearly a cup of chili and liberal doses of salsa and corn chips — all on an 8-inch bun.

Whitecaps spokesman Mickey Graham says the burger is a gimmick that’s being promoted as a very unhealthy menu item.

See, if I was the store owner, I'd tell them right where to go with that suggestion.

But it sounds disgusting anyway, so, yeah.

why does it need a label?
any idiot could figure out that it's probably not very good for you.
it's not that hard to figure out.

So, this is America's new invention?

$20 for a burger is way too much too. Not to mention that would probably be enough for a daily calorie intake.

Oh gross.
I might eat that if I hadn't eaten for a straight month, but definitely no other time.
But really, labeling it? Isn't it OBVIOUS that it's full of calories? No one is that idiotic.

Well, the number of calories has been "X"-ed out from the O.P., but it's clearly four digits. Therefore... ew. That's just nasty.

It's just under double the recommended daily intake for an adult male...Original figures are still in the linked article.

And I'm for not putting a warning label on it. If someone wants it, they're entitled to eat it. Take the warning labels off everything and let the stupidity issue on this planet resolve itself.

If someone goes to eat it and cannot figure out that such a pile of slop is unhealthy, then I say let them eat it. Hell knows there's too many stupid people around, so another sifter is always more than welcome. If they cannot read the description of a burger or even ask an employee about it, then no need to have a warning label, let them think for themselves and see what they come up with. Although, I must say, 10 points America for showing us what you're capable of, a $20 pile of slop.

A "warning label" might be a little extreme, but hey there's warnings on alcohol and cigarettes (and that doesn't stop people from using either of those). But a nutrition label- you know, those black and white labels on just about everything- would be a good idea. You don't have to look at it if you don't want to.

Wow. I couldn't eat a fifth of that burger, not that I would anyway, but still. Anyways, I don't think it should have a warning label. If you can't tell that something like that is bad for you by looking at it, then you are very dumb indeed.

That is such a preposterous piece of food that I can't help but want to try one. :P

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

Doesn't sound too yummy. Warning labels on foods, though? Seriously?

You know I agree that now, warning labels on foods (like- "WARNING- saturated fat has been shown to contribute to heart disease") sound extreme, but I bet at one point, people thought it was a little too extreme to put warning labels on alcohol or cigarettes- and now that's just the norm. Labelling it a "dietary disaster" is kind of over the top, but I see no problem with something like a warning label about high content of saturated fat.

no warning label needed... if you can't figure out that it is bad for you, then its just an example of Darwinism

A nutrition label would be nice I guess, but I don't see why anyone would want to eat anything like that in one sitting unless they were getting a cash prize for doing so. It's obvious how unhealthy it is. A warning label would be unnecessary.

If I was to buy that I'd have to share it with 7 friends.

And $20 is actually quite cheap for dinner for 8 people. xD

That's a pretty intense burger...Haha.

I'll admit, I would love to try it just once. I really love food and such, and will eat anything.

As for warning labels...Can't any reasonable person see that this is just not good for you?

I've been craving chili, salsa, and corn chips. There's no way I'd be able to eat the whole thing or even half of it, but I'd at least taste it.
