News - SUI - Surfing Under the Influence - April 2nd 2009, 12:57 AM

Lirpa Sloof, former resident of Swaziland, has decided that after using the information highway for 27 years that it is quite a dangerous place for children, women, and the general public. She wrote to the governor of Wyoming, where she currently resides. She explained several reasons why actively using a computer that is connected to the World Wide Web should be illegal while intoxicated:

"Dear Mr. Freudenthal,

I will make this brief as I know you have little time on your hands...

Recently there have been reports of minors posting pictures of their genitals on the WWW and having no recollection of it the next day...

For the sake of everyone's present and future, surfing the internet with a blood alcohol level above DUI levels should be illegal" (Sloof).

She also went into detail about another topic...

"Discussing sex over the internet causes STDs...

My research team has discovered that 98% of people who discuss sex over the internet today will be infected by AIDS [HIV], Herpes, or vaginitis within a month" (Sloof).

She also suggested in her proposed law that any form of drugs (including caffeine), inhalants, or tobacco would also be entirely illegal while connected to the internet.

I know this affects a lot of individuals on this site, including myself, so I knew I should share it with you.

Do you have a source for this? I doubt this will ever be illegal, they have no way to enforce the law.

98% of people who TALK about sex get HIV, herpes or vaginitis within a MONTH. What kind of research is that? It might be slightly more believable if she'd said ANY STIs, but even then the figure is pretty much impossible. I'd wager a real piece of research would perhaps find a figure maybe a few times higher than the general populations incidence, but that's about it.

Also, the DUI limit is really quite low anyway, with most people reaching it after only a few drinks, so I don't think all these DUI people are going to completely forget their night on the computer at that level of intoxication.

Given that Lirpa Sloof is an anagram of April Fools, you're almost certainly right.
