Dead Coke addict's family to seek compensation. - April 20th 2012, 06:07 AM

The family of a woman who drank up to eight litres of Coca-Cola a day - partly blamed for her death - say the soft drink should carry warning signs.
Invercargill mother-of-eight Natasha Marie Harris died in 2010 and the coroner's inquest into her death, in Invercargill on Thursday, was told the main cause was cardiac arrhythmia.

Won't fly.

"Also a heavy smoker with a 30-a-day habit"? Going to sue the cigarette companies also? Nah, just sue Coca-cola for causing her death. Even in constructive negligence, it won't fly. Too many causes.

Because in the end, it doesn't even matter.

Re: Dead Coke addict's family to seek compensation. - April 20th 2012, 09:54 AM

When I first heard my family discussing the news article of a coke addict's death, I thought they meant cocaine - then I heard the words "coke factory" and put 2 and 2 together. (And as usual, got 5.)

Anyway, it's completely ridiculous. Whether she was addicted or not, it was still her choice to both purchase and drink the coke, and if the family, seeing her health problems, made no attempt at intervention, then I would say that they are somewhat to blame as well.

And clearly, there's a lot more going on here than just too much fizzy drink. The woman may also have had a serial case of the stupids . . . the family aren't going to get any compensation from coke, their case won't stand up in court, it'll just be a waste of their time.

All this does is gives the rest of the population something to shake their heads about and complain about the ridiculousness of.

When I first started reading the article, I freaked out on the inside... Because I was drinking a diet coke!

Anyways, poor nutrietion, smoking, and drinking too much pop were factors, but in the end, no one freaking told her to eat wrong, smoke, or drink 8 liters a day, so it's her fault for not thinking healthy enough.

Definitely - I spent the first few seconds thinking "Good luck finding the dealer, much less suing them."

Anyway, even with the most generous interpretation of constructive negligence I cannot see this case overcoming the burden of proof that Coca-Cola was to blame for this woman's death. The one addictive substance in it, caffeine, is clearly identified on the label as required by various jurisdictions, and the medical evidence linking caffeine to cardiac dysrhythmia is patchy at best, as is evidence of sugar addiction which would be the only other presumable cause of action. There is sufficient public health information present about the risks of both in any event, and neither are unique to Coca-Cola (other examples: Pepsi, Red Bull, pretty much any energy drink on the market...). As such, while this woman's death is tragic and I sympathise with her family for their loss, I feel their claim will not succeed.

Yes. Blame the Coke for your stupidity. That'll work.

Agreed with the misleading title.

As for the story, it's stupid that they're even considering it. It was her decision to knock back that much coke and what not on a daily basis and her families decision to not step in or get her some help so how can they expect compensation? If anything, they all need a slap for being so stupid in both trying to get compensation and for not intervening.

8 to 10 liters a day of coke; that's about ~2.5 gallons a day, plus a heavy-smoking habit of 30-a-day, throw in poor diet habit and probably isn't leading an active life either. Yep, totally make sense to sue the Coca-Cola company.

But jokes aside, it's possible for someone to stomach THAT MUCH of coke in a day?

You've got to be kidding me? This family wants MONEY because their daughter/wife/whatever:

- Ate poorly
- Never exercised
- Smoked like a chimney

- And, oh yeah, drank two and a half freaking GALLONS of cocoa-cola in a day! Come on, people, she woke up to a glass of coke on her bedside table.

That woman was an idiot. EVERYONE knows that poor habits like that kill you. It was on the labels of the cigarettes she smoked, I am sure. It's ALL over everywhere.

And oh yeah, ANYTHING in excess can kill you. You can die of drinking too much WATER! How do you think people overdose on things like potassium and vitamin C? Because they use too much!

It is NOT cocoa-cola's fault that this consumer made poor choices. And for her family to try and swindle money out of them for their daughter's own stupidity is despicable.
