Good Christian books - April 29th 2012, 01:05 AM

So I have started reading Christian books and I find that they really help me with my day to day struggles. I have a few books in my car that my friend gave me, I cannot remember all the names of them but I am still looking for more books. It usually takes me a bit longer to read these books because I like to let the stuff I read sink in. So far I have read:

Captivating by (I believe) Stasi Eldrige?
Love Wins by Rob Bell
His Princess by Sheri Rose Shepard
I also read a book that was written and self published by a pastor in a church my friend is affliated with.

Now, I have the book Crazy Love and I think I am going to read that next but I would definitely appreciate it if I could get some more suggestions.

And, I know that this could have gone in literature but I thought it might get better replies here. If I was wrong in putting it here sorry!

Crazy Love is an okay book. I admire Francis Chan because he is very honest, unlike most Pastors. He doesn't have the mindset of, "I am right, I know everything, and everyone else is wrong." He comes from an empathetic attitude, where what he speaks of is what he is learning. He isn't high-minded. He is probably similar to Rob Bell (which will probably make some evangelicals be upset that I said that), but he isn't as stand offish or trying to be different, like Rob Bell is. He doesn't try to create controversy, he is just honest. He even wrote a book (Erasing Hell), that was intended to be a response to Rob Bell, but turned out to be something different.

Anyways, a book I like better than Crazy Love is a book called the Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne. He has several books that are worth looking into. But, I'd start there. Another great book to look at is one called The Early Christians: In Their Own Words by Eberhard Arnold. Otherwise, I recommend anything by Soren Kierkegaard, though you have to be into deep thought to understand most of his writings. And something a bit lighter is Blue Like Jazz. For Soren Kierkegaard, I recommend starting with these: Training (or Practice) in Christianity, Purity of Heart is to Will One Thing, or Works of Love. Training/Practice is probably one of my favorites, but Works of Love is probably the best overall Kierkgaard.

Out of everything I told you, look at these books in this order:
The Irresistible Revolution
The Early Christians
Blue Like Jazz
Practice in Christianity

The early Christians and Practice are a bit deep, but WELL worth the investment.

Also, as of current debates, I recommend The Fire that Consumes by Fudge.
