TeenHelp Bible Study? - May 18th 2012, 07:58 PM

My brothers and my sisters,

I was wondering if any of you would be interested in starting an online Bible study? I was thinking this would be a great way to get to know each other, and at the same time, gain some theological insight and interpretations from various Christian members.

How it would work? Well, I am up for suggestions. But as of now these are my thoughts:
Schedule a day and time to meet in the Chat Room, weekly.
Pick a bible subject or passage, read it, study, meet, and discuss it.

I would also be interested in sharing communion/Eucharist/Lord's Supper in these meetings with anyone willing. I know we won't be able to break the bread together, or share drink together, but we don't necessarily need to, I don't think.

I would also like to use this as an opportunity to pray for one another publicly. And perhaps open by reading a Psalm (instead of singing).

I would welcome all "Christians," whatever your denomination, or in some cases, the supposed denomination of "non."

Anyways, I thought I'd ask and get a head count of how many people would be interested in this.

Also, I would like many people to teach or share their opinions during this. A new person every week. That is, I don't want one person to be a designated "teacher."

Let me know. 1-2-3 don't all flood at once.

Re: TeenHelp Bible Study? - May 18th 2012, 09:17 PM

I am not a Christian, and have no interest in this, but I'm not here to be annoying, don't worry. I'm going to give you some advice for setting these kind of things up, since I have done these kind of things in the forum before.

I think the chat is a great idea, but it's hard with different time zones. Be prepared for the time differences though, and try to find the best time for all the different countries. I have found afternoons for Americans, evenings/nights for Brits, and mornings for Australians have been the best. If you end up setting up a date where a good amount of people can show up, you may want to instant message a mod when you get there and let them know this will be going on. They can let you use a particular room, so that it doesn't take over the main Chat Room 1, but before you can announce in that room for any last minute people to come in as well.

Also, this can also be done in the forums as well, to give more time for people to reply, and to not leave people out who cannot make the time of the meetings in chat. You may just want to put a note on the title that this is for TeenHelp's Bible Study so that the atheists don't come and start debating, since that wouldn't be the point of the club.

Hope that helped! I'm not a Christian myself, but I think this is a great way to bring people together on a site where people really do need community. I wish you luck in it!

Thanks for the advice. I considered perhaps posting some "highlights" of the discussion on the forum for those who missed it. It all depends how many people would actually like to be there regularly. I'm not expecting many, but I guess I'll find out.

I like the idea however I cannot participate in the chat room.

I would be interested. Currently, I have a Young Life club on here. I don't no maybe you could add more thought to my group. I think you should also make this group open to everyone of all religions even though most people are Christians. I would be more than happy to teach what I no.

I think this is a great idea and I think the forums would be better than using the chat, just in my opinion but I hope to participate either way! My school had a bible study but I didn't really start going until the very end of the year! and now school is over

I'm not a Christian but I have a few ideas or questions. To ensure only the desired individuals discuss without interruptions from unwanted people, why not go off TH and use something such as Skype or Oovoo? If you don't want to install anything on your computer, why not try Stickam?

Another idea is to allow non-Christians into your bible study? The purpose isn't to start a debate over whether god exists, there are enough of those on these forums already. Instead, the purpose would be to question and challenge because that is the greatest way to learn and exchange ideas. Perhaps there will be questions, whether it regards scripture or personal views that cannot yet be answered. Alternatively, perhaps some of the Christian members would have questions that non-Christians cannot answer, or perhaps even a time to educate members of different faiths.

Since it is already deemed, "bible study", the ball is in your court.

I'm totally down for this, but I can't get into chat until Java starts working on my laptop again, which might not happen anytime soon. I think making a social group with weekly discussions or something in the forums would be a good idea. Also, I'd be interested in teaching some lessons, if you're still looking for people like that.

I'd recommend doing it in the forums. It's a place most people can definitely reach, therefore more people will join in hopefully. I think Megan uses her phone a lot so she wouldn't be able to use the chat room (i don't think so anyway). It'd also serve as more of an archive too.

Another thing you could do would be start a group in the TH groups section, because they have their own message boards.

I will make a group. How do you invite people to a group? Also, would anyone be able to design a avatar for us? That'd be cool. As far as looking for teachers, yes, I do not wish to teach much, if at all. I prefer to be in the background. So, if you want to teach, feel free. Thought I'll certainly over-express my opinion when I get into a topic. I'll develop more as time progresses to get things more organized.

You can link the group in here and anybody who wants to join can click the link and join from there. The group idea was brilliant!

I like the idea but I'm currently in my ipad and cannot access the chat room. Maybe Skype like other users have suggested.

It's nice that you made a user group.

Posting a chat room schedule would also be nice.

I would be up for this, but I would probably prefer forums rather than chat. Also I am happy to "teach" at different points

Please could you post a link to the social group? (sorry - you may already have! not awake right now)
