NEWS: The Higgs Boson exists, according to a leaked video from CERN - July 4th 2012, 01:39 AM

http://www.theage.com.au/technology/...704-21g63.html

And here I thought they wouldn't even have "strong evidence" for another five or six years.

Your thoughts?

EDIT: the Higgs Boson exists! Not that we weren't expecting it, but still a great discovery!

A victory for science. A loss for religion?

Because in the end, it doesn't even matter.

A great science discovery. Bill Nye was an awesome scientist because he hardly ever mentioned anything about religion when he taught us about science when I was a kid. He didn't say "see here kids, this here is why there's no religion. Well herp derp, I'm an asshole!" Leave the science shit with the science, and leave religion with the religion. It's not a competition, and anyone who believes that it will die just like everyone else...but only with a bigger head.

Re: NEWS: The Higgs Boson exists, according to a leaked video from CERN - July 4th 2012, 06:10 PM

It's certainly a very significant step forward in the progress of the LHC and its associate experiments, and those working on the project should rightly be pleased with this latest news.

However...at the risk of sounding like a party pooper, we haven't found the Higgs. Not yet. We have found a particle at the 125-126 GeV range (so approximately 125-130 times the size of a proton) which appears to display some characteristics which would be expected were it the Higgs boson. As the particle physicists working on the project themselves would say - in calmer moments, anyway - that is still some way from confirming that (a) it is definitely the Higgs and (b) it is the Higgs as proposed by current understanding of the Standard Model. The work to reach either of those milestones is going to take several more years of data analysis, during which time it could turn out to be the Higgs or it could turn out to be a different particle sharing some characteristics but wildly different in others. Right now, we know that there is definitely something there - finding out what that something actually is will be the real excitement. So, were I Professor Stephen Hawking I'd hold fire on coughing up the $100 bet he placed - there's still some way to go on this, and that's leaving aside resolving the mathematical problems which beset the Standard Model.

So in conclusion, it is a hugely significant step in terms of making a discovery, but we're still some way from understanding what that discovery truly is.

Oh, and religion won't be bothered.
