don't tell God how big your problems are - October 17th 2012, 01:06 AM

"Don't tell God how big your problems are, tell your problems how great your God is."

I've heard this phrase on so many occasions and I never know exactly how I feel about it. Is praying about the struggles in life not enough? Is there a good way to face things head on...other than praying and letting the Lord fight our battles for us?

It's perfectly fine to talk to God about your problems; that quote isn't saying not to tell Him what you're going through. I think it's just saying that you shouldn't worry about how big your problems are, because your God is bigger and He's on your side- so your problems should really be afraid of you/God. You have no reason to fear anything because God is bigger than everything.

Praying about your struggles absolutely is enough. I mean, there will be times when God tells you to do something, and when that times comes absolutely do it! But, if you honestly don't know what to do, be still and let Him work.

What I have learned is that praying and asking for help isn't just all about "letting God fight our battles" like you said, a lot of the time we also need to exercise faith and part of that is acting to. Have you ever heard the phrase "Faith without works is dead." Well I live by this. It means we cant just have faith and move on from everything, sometimes when we say our prayers in the morning and ask God for help with our problems (knowing that He will) we also need to get off our knees and get to work and do as much as we can for ourselves. Heavenly Father will be right beside us every step of the way and he will fill in the gaps and make things that seem impossible, possible.
I also think what this quote that you are asking about is saying that we dont need to tell God how "big" our problems are because he already knows and can see that we need help, he's waiting for us to exercise our faith and ask for help and strength to endure hard things.
I hope this made sense and helps.

To answer your question, it's more effective if you actually do something to fix the problem. Praying might make you feel better (but that's not even guaranteed), but it's best to try to come up with a solution.

Theres nothing wrong with talking to God about your personal struggles. That's what He is there for. To help you. He knows your heart & what you're thinking & wants to help. He knows your pain & loves all of His children. God doesn't just hand things to us, however. We need to want it & work for it.

When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile.
