Is is bad or wrong? - February 23rd 2013, 03:27 AM

I've come to myself as atheist. I'm just more on the side of science. I don't believe in one superior God or anything like that. But people I guess judge me in a negative way because I listen to Christian music. But I just like the idea that people have someone to believe in, which I view it as a friend. Not by God. People find it wrong and kind of offensive because they think I'm making fun of it. Which I'm not, I like how most of the songs are happy. So is it wrong or bad if I'm atheist, but listen to Christian music?

I wouldn't like it any less. There have been plenty of times in my life when I've been listening to a band for months on end, only to recommend it to a friend or two and have them tell me that they don't enjoy listening to Christian bands like the one I was recommending.

I'm an atheist myself, so I understand what you mean by it feeling a little wrong. I had a problem convincing myself it was okay to listen to Christian music at first also, especially because I also felt like people were judging me (my atheist friends in particular would make fun of me once in a while about it). But there really aren't any moral boundaries between who should and shouldn't listen to it. If you think it sounds nice, then it's completely okay to listen to it whenever you want to. And by listening to it as a non-Christian, I would think that you're actually paying a compliment to rather than making fun of Christians. You're essentially agreeing that it sounds very nice just as a piece of music in itself, and that anyone could enjoy listening to Christian songs.

That thing about me not knowing about a band being Christian/playing Christian music and finding out later happened with bands like Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, and a few others.

Nope, it's totally fine I listen to Christian music too and I am also an atheist.
I like the idea of a God-like-bring, it's not like I'm some how opposed to it or think there is something wrong with it, but I just don't believe in it myself. But I listen to stuff like Switchfoot, BarlowGirl, Amy Grant and Casting Crowns... One of my favourites from the genre is "Psalm 73- My Gods Enough" by BarlowGirl and.... well... given that I don't believe in a God I can't even genuinely relate to this haha ... You really shouldn't have to justify your music choices... We're not all cowboys/girls yet many of us listen to country music, same thing if you ask me

I listen to Flyleaf and a lot of their songs are influenced by their Christianity. It's not offensive. I don't believe in God myself but I can appreciate music about God.

I would say it's not a problem at all. Think about reversing it... like, think about Christians who listen to music that's about non-Christian things like sex (non-marital), violence, swearing in the lyrics, etc. Music is music, it doesn't define who you are. You can believe what you want to believe, and listen to whatever music you want to listen to - your choice!

Cheers

I actually listen to a fair bit of Christian music, though I'm far from Christian myself. Music is very subjective, so I interpret it how I like. As long as you're listening to it because you like the music and not because you want to make fun of people's beliefs, there shouldn't be a problem.

There's nothing wrong with listening to Christian music, even though you're an atheist. I think it's a lot more common than people realize. Although their songs aren't always obviously centered around Jesus, bands like Lifehouse, Flyleaf, Switchfoot, and Skillet are Christian. People who are atheists listen to those bands without Christians saying anything about it, so I don't see why listening to more blatantly religious music should be an issue either.

Well, I'm atheist, but one of my favourite songs has "I just found God" repeated in the chorus (cookie for whoever gets the song ). It really doesn't matter in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure when I was like 9 or something all I listened to and sang to were songs about guys wanting to 'get with' girls in clubs. Obviously I didn't like the songs because of the lyrics, I liked them for the way it sounded and I think that's the way it is for most people with music. I don't think it's wrong to like Christian music while being Atheist. I myself find Christian music pretty inspirational...

Is it that song by Mike Scott and the Waterboys? I can't remember what it's called...

Okay thank you guys, I mainly listen to a lot of country music, which usually talks about God, like a lot of Rascal Flatts songs. I also like the band The Afters. So thanks again!
