Question Explaining the Pagan path to others - April 12th 2013, 01:04 AM

I have just recently decided to tell my good friends and some family that I'm Pagan. But the only problem is, they are strict Christians and Catholics. Any ideas on how to explain Paganism to them without them feeling really wierd? And if in the worst case scenerio they try to "save" me, what should I say?

Catelynn,

I remember when I told my best friend that I was Wiccan when I was 16. She was/is a devout Christian, so when I told her, she very seriously told me that it will lead me to hell. She also said that should couldn't be friends with a witch. It broke my heart. How could my best friend in the whole wide world say such a thing to me?

I am telling you this story as a cautionary tale. We remained friends but never spoke of religion again. Some people are not as open minded as we would like them to be. So just be very careful who you talk to about this. You might only want to tell your best of friends first instead of just jumping out of the broom closet and announcing it to the world. There honestly is no amount of "explaining" the faith to anyone who already deems it as evil. All you can do is let them know and then live an honest and good life. Show them through your actions that you are not a bad person and your faith does not corrupt a soul. That is the best way for people to believe you. And as you can guess, that will take some time. But that's OK. If you are serious enough in your faith that you want to tell family and friends then you will be serious enough to make the effort and dedication to be a good person as well as a good pagan.

If they try to "save you" just remain calm and respectful. Let them say what they feel they need to say but at the end calmly let them know that you feel this path is what's best for you. Its just that simple.

Best of luck

Pure curiosity but,

What sort of Paganism? As Paganism is a more general description? Are you Wiccan.... or an Asatru, if you're Asatru, who do you have runes too? Odin, Thor, etc?
