Re: just had to get this off my chest - July 1st 2013, 05:50 PM

I had my first crisis of faith last week. I read something I shouldn't have online, and it had all those questions that make me stumble and shoved them all in my face at once. I was overwhelmed. I felt like I had lost my child-like faith....And it felt like my faith would never recover. My temples ached; I wanted to explode. My mind was full of contradictions that night; I know God exists, but why do I doubt? Oh, it's amazing how my faith could break in just 15-20 minutes. Ha, I thought my faith was stronger than this, but turns out, I was wrong.
There were lots of little things that kept me going, comforting whispers of the Holy Spirit, but what really helped was just sitting down and reading the Bible, even through I was confused. I read the Gospel of John. I reconnected myself to who Jesus is...and I think that saved me.
If you want to save your faith, I recommend reading the Bible. And about all the bad things in the world, remember God didn't intend for this messed up world; the devil caused Eve to disobey God and that first sin is the original sin that we have all inherited unfortunately. Have you ever wanted to do the right thing, but chose the wrong thing, even though you didn't want to? That is our corrupted nature; the fleshly attraction to sin. It stinks. "Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Matthew 26:41 (NRSV).
So because we all sin, we are NOT good enough for heaven, but that's why Jesus came and paid for us. Through Him, we can be with Him forever. Without Him, we are lost in our sin, and if we die in them, we can't go to heaven, so we go to hell. So honestly, we all deserve hell; humankind has produced only one truly innocent person and we killed the guy. That's Jesus, if you didn't catch that. (Oh, and I can't take credit for the last couple sentences; found that on www.net-burst.net.)
I hope I didn't shake your faith further. Please grab a Bible and read. Try the Gospels first; your faith may be a little too shaky to comprehend the OT; I mean no insult, but people often find that God acts badly in the OT. A person of faith does not see it like they do. But start wherever you want; pray for insight while reading.
I encourage you to come back, but I can't make ya.
God bless you.

You're not the first to question these things. I don't get why a humble god would be so offended to lash out and send people to hell for not worshiping him, either. Seems contradicting.

This would be a great time to explore other belief systems and religions.

I started questioning Christianity when I was 14. After reading the Torah, Isaiah, the gospels and acts I realized I didn't believe in Christianity anymore.
There are some religious people who say suffering brings you closer to God if that answers your question at all.

You should consider your religion and other religions deeply. If there is a God I'm sure he would not be offended by someone wanting to seek out the truth.

Reading the bible is a good idea. I deepened my understanding of Christianity by learning about what Jews believe and the Jewish scriptures.
I recommend against just reading the hand picked parts to affirm the Christian worldview. The Torah has some very violent stories in it and at times it becomes so boring just going into nitty-gritty of laws, but it's worth reading. Ruth and Esther are nice stories about two women in the Jewish scriptures. The Gospels and acts would be good to read.

I posted these links before, but you might find them of interest.
