Dream Theory - December 23rd 2013, 08:02 PM

So this is the first thing I posted here that is not about religion. I think that it's either science or philosophy. Idk. Well anyway, onto my theory.

Well you know how some scientists think that life is a dream and death is actually waking up? (Even if you don't know it, I'm telling you now)
Then that would mean that 'dreams' are snippets of actual reality and I think that you have an alternate self living in an alternate reality and while your dreaming, your subconscious enters your alternate self, but your individual thinking is left with your regular body and that people who control their dreams have found a way to bring their individual thinking ability with them. And that doesn't necessarily go against religion either because your alternate self could actually be able to switch between Heaven and Hell based on their actions and you know that when you have a good dream, your alternate self is in Heaven, but if you have a nightmare, your alternate self is in Hell. And when you die you live completely in your alternate self and the alternate reality, which would be either Heaven or Hell. Does that make sense? My dad told me to lay off the drugs :/

Sounds more like the Matrix than any scientific theory I have ever heard of. Do you perhaps have some sources for us to look at? That might be helpful.

Personally I think dreams are meant to help us work things out or guide us. I don’t think they are meant to be taken literally, but reflecting on dreams can help us look at our internal battles.

Take for example recently I have been having dreams of having to take care of children in distress. Often I am in an extremely traumatic situation where the child is hurt or abused and I have to figure out how to help them. I take that as a sign that I am nervous about becoming a mother and how I need to work on relaxing about not knowing what to do in every single situation. Now, is that really what my dreams are telling me? Who knows, but I find reflecting on them to be personally helpful.

Some people don’t even remember their dreams. But I think in general science agrees that they have no idea what dreams are really for or why we have them. There are just a lot of good guesses out there.

I would have to ask if there's any basis for the theory? It sounds somewhat sensational and...unrealistic to me.
We can't really prove our existence, but I tend to go on the assumption that everyone does exist and isn't a computer generated world, since theorising with no chance of evidence isn't an especially great use of time, in my opinion.

Re: Dream Theory - December 23rd 2013, 09:03 PM

I have the same views as Lizzie. I think that our dreams are influenced by our experiences in the waking world and then while we are in REM (rapid eye movement) sleep our brains attempt to make sense of our memories. Our visual centers in our brains are still active while we sleep and that is how we are able to dream. I don't think there is enough evidence to say that they are snippets of actual reality and again like Lizzie said, researchers are still not exactly sure about why we dream.

And here you are living, despite it all.

I have no evidence really. I called it theory cause idk what else to call it. Things just pop into my head and I decide to believe it because for some reason I trust that my subconscious knows what it's talking about. It's a cool way to look at the world though, isn't it? Reality pretty much sucks, so I live in my delusional and unrealistic world. U N I C O R N S

Re: Dream Theory - December 25th 2013, 12:47 AM

Dreams are the mind's way to process information. The way in which this happens for people is different, but dreams exist to help us sift through events of the day and to process subconscious things that may be affecting us and our quality of life. I do think they are fascinating, but I also believe they have a purpose, which takes away much of the mysticism some give dreams. I don't think they lead us to alternate realities or are a valid part of any other conspiracy theory- they are simply a method of cognitive processing.

I was asking for your source for the scientistsí theory you talked about in your original post. Do you have something we could read more about on that?
