Lightbulb A Panromantic, almost heterosexual Christian - August 30th 2015, 06:53 AM

Wow... this is the most that I have ever put myself out there on the Internet. If you don't agree with my views, please don't attack me. I know that I'm relatively safe on this website, but I'm still paranoid.
So... first an introduction to myself. I am a panromantic, kind-of-heterosexual Christian and I am completely okay with this.
This is where my readers are divided. The Christians are saying "How is that possible? Don't you know that it's a sin to be homosexual?" and everyone else is saying "How is that possible? Aren't all Christians homophobic?" I believe that both groups are wrong. The latter for more obvious reasons, so I will explain my reasoning behind the former. Please continue with an open mind and heart.
There are several passages in the Bible that people claim to say that homosexuality is a sin. I can't remember them all off the top of my head (feel free to tell me more and I will look into it) but if you look at each one in context, you will see that it's talking about something completely different. One was about pedophillia, another was about rape, and yet another was about drunken oregies. On top of that, the Bible also says that incest is wrong, but Adam and Eve had two sons. Who are they going to have sex with if they want to continue the human race? Their mother. Many things said and implied in the first testiment are to be taken with a grain of salt because of the extreme differences in time periods, cultures, and circumstances.
After discovering all of this, I felt lost since basically everything that I had once thought to be true turned out to be wrong. I gave it much thought? And the more I thought about it, the more I realised that it wouldn't make any sense for God to dislike homosexuality. Assuming that it's a healthy relationship, it brings out the same things in people as straight couples: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Sound familiar? Yeah, those are the fruits of the spirit, which the Bible says is brought out in things that are GOOD!
After much research, thought and prayer, I have determined that homosexuality can't be a sin because it brings so much goodness to people and the Bible never says that it's wrong. Besides, when you see a gay couple, there are very few people who can deny that they are adorable together. If it were truly wrong, wouldn't we get a gut feeling of disgust or horror as we do when watching a murder?

Re: A Panromantic, almost heterosexual Christian - August 30th 2015, 11:14 AM

Hey there,

From the get-go, I'd like to let you know that my point of view is that of someone who was once a Christian, but has drifted closer and closer to atheism over the past couple of years. One of the biggest issues that I had with the Bible and religion is exactly what you pointed out: inconsistencies and cherry-picking.

As you pointed out, many of the verses in the Bible that homophobic Christians quote frequently are in reference to something entirely different. The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is a fantastic example of this. Because homosexuality was practiced in those cities, a surface level reading of the text can lead people to assume that the sin is homosexuality. However, if one were to take the time to read the text and attempt to understand the context and deeper meanings of the verses, they would come to find out that the "immoral sexual acts" were the large number of rapes, both heterosexual and homosexual, that occurred in the cities.

The idea that God sees homosexuality as a sin comes from the fact that those who claim to "study" the Bible have a tendency to read passages on a superficial level, rather than taking the time to truly study the text to gain a deeper understanding of what the text is really saying. Instead, they find verses that appear to fit with their personal beliefs and call it God's Word.

Disclaimer: I'm completely aware that this does not apply to all Christians. There are many who are very tolerant, accepting, and do take the time to truly study the Bible. It's the ones who use the Bible as an excuse for their bigotry that create issues.
