I have one of thoseeee

I don't wear it very often and I don't really see many other people wearing them. If I'm honest I probably wouldn't notice anyone wearing it in the first place but if I did notice I probably wouldn't think anything.

First thought that sprung to mind was they might be Wiccan/pagan/something down that route. Or possibly just someone who likes the pentagram logo. Beyond that, it's an interesting shape and that's about it. It certainly wouldn't make me recoil or anything.

Try hard.

I mean, I know it's a pentacle. I actually think I have one somewhere. It's just that most people who seem to wear them are trying to give the illusion of being edgy or 'dark'.

I've seen too many of them carved into high schoolers arms to take them seriously.

I don't know what it is.

But I remember when I was in fourth grade, the neighbor girl and her mom had told me that that a star with a circle around it is the sign for the devil.

A symbol of a pagan or wiccan religion. A pentagram.

It's a symbol... probably for some sort of belief. Other than that, I'm not too familiar with it.

I see it as a symbol of faith, usually for some sort of wiccan or pagan belief. Quite a few religions/faiths use it though, I think, so I guess it means different things to different people. The upside down one usually has a goat's head in it and is called the Sigil of Baphomet. That's the evil one

I know it's not associated with Satanism because it would have 2 points up, 1 point down in order to represent the general shape of the Baphomet, Seal of Lucifer or Setians.

So I'd probably associate the given pentagram with the stereotypical Wicca pentagram, which has 1 point up, 2 points down.

If the person isn't a Wicca or pagan belief, I would either associate the person with having a pentagram for some reason or they're a complete fail at impersonating certain Left-Hand paths (not all, as not sure if Wicca falls under left-hand or right-hand or both).

If I saw someone wearing a pentagram I think I would have to take in everything they are wearing to come to a conclusion. If they look teenage years and are wearing all black then perhaps it’s just their way of expressing defiance by wearing a symbol that has been immersed in controversy for so many years.

But if they are dressed in a casual manner and wearing one then I would be lead to believe they are Wiccan of some sort. But… I am not actually sure I have ever seen that myself. Just because, like I said, the controversy around that piece brings up so much unwanted crap. It’s more likely the Wiccan would be wearing a crystal, a talisman, a moon pendant or perhaps even a tree pendant. Much less likely to be seen for what it truly means to the Wiccan, without causing problems.

I have always been envious of the Christians who wear crosses so freely around their necks. I would most certainly be given dirty looks or even unwanted comments if I wore a pentacle. I really would have wished that by now our religion would have been more accepted into society. I guess I at least have to be so thankful to the Lord and Lady that we are no long executed.

What I find interesting is the amount of people saying that when the symbol is upside down, it's to do with devil worshipping. I might be wrong, but as far as I'm aware, when used in Wicca/Paganism the inverted pentagram is a symbol of Pan the Horned God. He's half man, half goat and is associated with the feeling of unease and danger when you're alone in a dark, natural place, say a forest. I'm not entirely sure how that was turned into devil worshipping. But I could be wrong.

Generally if I saw someone wearing that I'd think 'Cool!' and then start to wonder about their reasons for wearing it.

Well, when I first saw it, I knew it looked familiar but I couldn't place it in my mind. Then I remembered seeing it somewhere (actually, to be specific, in Lizzie's avatar ) and realized it was a symbol of the Wiccan/Pagan faith.

If I saw someone wearing it in public, I would definitely be interested. Although I don't practice Paganism, I think it's an intriguing religion. I really admire Pagans who feel they're able to express their religion so freely, because as Lizzie said, it's not as accepted in society as other belief systems.

But if it was being worn by a teenager who seemed to just like it because it looked cool, then I'd probably shake my head and continue on my way.

Mostly I would just think this: .

Reason: it's either a symbol for one stupid thing or another stupid thing, depending on the person.
Which really sucks, because it's a nice symbol.

I agree with Marguerite... definitely just trying way to hard to be edgy, especially if accompanied by "dark/edgy" clothes, hair, extra accessories and make up.

I would assume though that the person is either attempting to be Wiccan or some other "evil" and "edgy" religion

I'd think, "It's a pentagram. Maybe they're wiccan," and then go on about my day.

In all honesty though, it doesn't mean much these days. Lots of people wear them to look cool. No one is going to assume you're wiccan because you wear one.

Nowadays I would assume (given appropriate attire etc as people have said) that they are just trying to be edgy. Corporations have managed to rebrand and take any meaning out of symbols and faces that just shouldn't be forgotten. Another example that tics me off is Che Guevara merchandise, people seem to just see it as a symbol of freedom and revolution with out any understanding of the man and his atrocities.

I don't see how it's any different from Christians wearing a cross around their neck, so I would just assume they're Wiccan. If it was someone I knew wasn't Wiccan or Pagan and they are wearing it to be defiant, then I would think of them as ignorant.

This! ^ I don't understand what's so edgy about it anyway. It's no different from any other religious symbol.

Then, I challenge you to wear one openly for one whole week.

Honestly, it shouldnít be seen as something terrible or edgy, especially since itís such a peaceful faith. But, like I said, itís been immersed in controversy against the church for so long itís been socialized into a negative imagine. And therefore, receives many negative reactions.

I've never actually witnessed anyone react negatively, though? Maybe I just come from a liberal little town, but I knew quite a few people (including one very close friend) who wore pentagrams openly and regularly, and none that were harassed in my presence; none also mentioned this happening. A small sample of people, yes, but a very different experience than I'm seeing described.

When I actually notice someone wearing a pentagram, I assume they're Wiccan. Emphasis on "actually notice". We spend a lot of time thinking about how other people perceive us, but I'd be interested to know to what extent we actually notice (in passing) other people and what they wear. I'm much more likely to look a stranger in the eye and notice their behavior, like rudeness or politeness (letting a door swing shut in someones face versus holding it open) or cleanliness (washing or not washing hands in a public toilet), than I am to take in someone's appearance (exclusive of clothes, I suppose, since you can't help but notice them) like what jewelry they wear or their shoes. Perhaps you notice crosses more (referring to your first post in this thread, Lizzie ) because you do envy their wearing one; but perhaps others may not so hastily notice your own choice of jewelry?

I'd surely wear a pentagram if I prescribed to a faith which considered it a holy symbol. People receive a great deal of hate for wearing crosses, just as people of all religions are discriminated against by someone and in some way--but faith isn't about how others perceive you, but about your relationship with [God] and your personal [path/salvation/etc].

Someday I will be strong enough to lift not one but both of us.

It has a meaning in many religions take for example Christianity. Christians called it the pentalpha, and it was believed to ward off witches and demons. That is only one belief but it is society that turns into something it is not. When we look at something often times people are known to see what they want to see

Che would be rolling in his grave if he new that his face was being sold on crappy T Shirts and the like to make big companies richer. It's ironic enough to be funny but too annoying to do anything but hate the person wearing it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some crazed Che fan. I just don't understand where the whole phase came from. It's like buying a Kippah with Hitler's face sewn onto it. It just doesn't make any sense.

Also people who wear those shirts yet couldn't tell you a single thing about the man (like people who wear Led Zepplin T Shirts but don't know any of their songs).

Oh oh and people who wear cheap crosses from fashion and jewelry stores because they 'look cool' and are all 'blinged out', yet they aren't Christian. That annoys me to no end also.

To be honest I don't think anything would happen. Maybe it's different for you because you live in the bible belt or something (just guessing) but where I'm from you'd likely get more crap for wearing a cross. And I say that as someone who is an Atheist (so I'm not just defending my religion or something).

And yeah, you might have people like me thinking 'what a try hard', but that's only because pentagrams and pentacles seem to go in tow with black clothing and racoon eyes. If I saw a person dressed normally I wouldn't think anything of it. I'd probably think they were wearing it because they looked nice and that would irritate me. I have yet to meet a Wiccan/Pagan who is over 18, dressed normally and educated about the subject. I'm not saying they aren't out there at all, I'm just speaking from experience and explaining my prejudice.

To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget

True, it is a religious symbol and shouldn't get different reactions however, it's people's understanding of what the symbol represents. As shown by several people in this thread, some were unsure if it was Wicca or Satanism, yet those two beliefs are not the same at all, starting with their religious symbols. People show very negative reactions to Satanism and its similar beliefs, despite knowing diddly shit of what Satanism is. No matter where you live, it's not a belief in the modern day that gets positive views. If you live in a bible belt area, then I'd expect people to be throwing bible's at you, possibly trying to do exorcisms and protesting your belief wherever you go in that area.

Because of this, although there are many Satanists with many churches (i.e. Church of Azazel), many of them don't wear religious symbols that are easily noticed. Some (LaVeyans) may wear a small Baphomet just like how a Christian would wear a cross. As a result of this lack of education people have on Satanism and Wicca, all they know is it's bad, so if you were to ask the average person what an upside-down (Petrine) cross means, I bet many would say Satanism, Wicca, anti-Christianity, etc... . In reality, it's a Christian symbol used to show humility to Christ.
