Christianity - its phiosophies - May 22nd 2011, 04:44 PM

What philosophical schools did Jesus, assuming he wasn't son of god, lean on?

Has anyone set about looking at whether Plato or Stoicism forms the basis of what he taught? Would that be correct?

Stoicism is probably fairly close, but I think you'd find some issues between Christ and His theology on the "Father" or in a Stoics case, a deity. Plato, maybe a little bit, however, Plato leaned heavily on Socrates philosophies, at least originally, which was rebuked by Christ and His Apostles as heresies. In fact there was an emerging group of converts who used to be Gnostic that were rebuked directly in some of the Epistles because their Philosophies.

Later, however, the church (which I don't agree was rightful), derived a lot of it's philosophy from Aristotle due to Aquinas.

"Daniel broke the kings decree, Peter stepped from the ship to the sea, there was hope for Job like a cut down tree... I hope that there's such hope for me... Blind as I've become, I used to wonder where you were. These days I can't find where You're not. Mine's been a yard carefully surface tended, foxes burrowed underground. Gardening so highly self-recommended, what could I have done but let You down? The sun and the moon, I want to see both worlds as one." -Aaron Weiss, mewithoutYou

I had made a thread before outlining similarities between Plato, particularly his Republic, and Jesus' teachings. But nobody responded.

How would Socrates have been heresy? Is it the bit where he argued the non-existence of deities?
