Tattoos and Religon - June 7th 2011, 06:40 PM

Okay, oddest thing happened to me a few days ago. I was at the store picking up some stuff for my mom and some lady came up to me and stared at me. Weirded out by this I asked what was wrong and she pointed at the cross I wear and asked if I was catholic. I said yes and she pointed at my tattoo then proceed to chew me out saying I had sinned because I have a tattoo...

Can someone please explain how having a tattoo and being a catholic is a sin?

Because it doesn't fit with what she considered to be normal, and obviously not being normal is a huge sin!

Seriously though, a lot of catholics/christians use their religion as an excuse to attack anything they dislike or are uncomfortable with whilst pretending to be all high and mighty themselves.

"You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh on account of the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord" (Lev. 19:28).

While I do think this is really a stupid point to make it is in the scriptures of the religion. Then again if you look hard enough you will find scripture against nearly everything.

It's not a sin. Paul says whatever you do, to do it in faith. If you have a clear conscience, don't let people judge you. With tattoos, people tend to quote a leviticus passage about not marking your body. However, this passage is about witchcraft, and right after it says not to cut your hair or facial hair. Yet people conveniently forget that part. Not to mention were not under the old testament law. People are always quick to point fingers. Don't worry about it if you have a clear conscience.

"Daniel broke the kings decree, Peter stepped from the ship to the sea, there was hope for Job like a cut down tree... I hope that there's such hope for me... Blind as I've become, I used to wonder where you were. These days I can't find where You're not. Mine's been a yard carefully surface tended, foxes burrowed underground. Gardening so highly self-recommended, what could I have done but let You down? The sun and the moon, I want to see both worlds as one." -Aaron Weiss, mewithoutYou

She's right. You're damned to hell!

You can turn or burn!!!!!!

Lol I'm just kidding, you sure she isn't the old lady who terrorized me in the parking lot the other day? Some people are so pathetic. If you don't conform to their standards you're doomed and God hates you. What happened to all their "God of peace acceptance and love" BS?

Some people consider a tattoo to be a corruption of the natural appearance and beauty of the human form, in this case, skin. Quite frankly, if that woman has a problem with your tattoo, she just needs to suck it up.

Re: Tattoos and Religon - June 8th 2011, 06:13 AM

Although it is said in the bible not to tattoo oneself, there is specific context to it, namely spell-casting, witchcraft, magick and the occulut:

"Do not practice divination or seek omens. “‘Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.
“‘Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD" (Leviticus 19:26-28)

The problem with quoting this is even if one were to ignore the witchcraft element, people cut their hair and trim their beards, which in a way is editing your body.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

She could be, it was an older woman. Haha.

After she got done chewing me out I just walked away pissed off. My tattoo is of a heart with wings on my foot with "Best" written over to symbolize my friendship with my friend.
I got it with a clear mind and I had been planning this for about four years. I really should have just told that lady off and said, as someone said before, suck it up. My mom has a tattoo and she is a very religious woman and my sister has three tattoos and she is very religious as well.

Re: Tattoos and Religon - June 8th 2011, 07:21 PM

It's ridiculous how many older people are against it. I had a guy lecture me the other day about one of my tattoos. He began telling me how God gave us perfect bodies, etc. and how he wished younger generations liked their bodies. But it's like, honestly, if that's the case, why even wear clothes? Why does his wife have earrings? Why wear certain styles, trends, etc.? I mean, if God gave us such "perfect bodies," then really, why are we all wearing clothes? We should be comfortable enough with out them and not find nude people indecent.

I couldn't have said it any better. I always got that discussion from my religion teacher and I thought the exact same thing John did. I also thought that we where given free will to do to our bodies what we please and if you want a piercing or a tattoo, go ahead. If you are thinking with a clear head and it is something that you want and thought long and hard about, go right ahead and let no one stop you.

The funny thing is, the church is bad. That's why they're the church. I recall, Christ came for the ungodly. Not the righteous. It seems people these days are more concerned about a religious show, than forgiveness.

Religion and tattoos is the most ridiculous thing ever. My dad wont even let me write on my hand! And I really want to get a tattoo but I know if I do he will kill me.

If you're Roman Catholic it's not against the religion; I don't know where but it says in the Catechism that you can have tattoos as long as they aren't anti-Catholic (such as a Swastika or an image of Satan) or apparently of the crucifixion (I forget why specifically though). So this woman doesn't know what she's sayin' :P
