Introducing myself to philosophy -
July 4th 2011, 08:38 AM
Does anyone knows a good film about philosophy?
I mean, actually philosophical, such as 'Waking Life', with an exposition of theories and so on. AND which philosopher would you recomend me? I'm becoming quite interested in philosophy nowadays and I currently have Unamuno, Comte-Sponville and Frankl books, would be interested in people like Nietzsche and Sartre, or maybe about politics like Marx do you know any good one you've read? I'd appreciate your answers

I know a lot of films with philosophical implications as it were, but I'm not sure if they count as explicitly 'actually philosophical' - and there are a few to do with various philosophical theories, for example Groundhog Day is a good one to watch to get a bit of a take on Nietsche's theory of eternal return, or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a great film and very good to watch if you're interested in theories of the constant self and memory etc.
I personally like Marcus Aurelius' Meditations as a sort of very basic collection of philosophical thoughs - I wouldn't recommend reading, say, Kant at a beginner level but Sartre is very easy to understand; I'd recommend Existentialism Is A Humanism. There are also a few philosophical giants like Locke, Hume, Descartes, even Aristotle who are fairly easy to understand, but you're probably best off getting a general book that covers several theories just as an introduction. Hope that helped

Thank you!
I've read an existentialist book and you're right, seems easy to understand and, on the other hard, it's pretty interesting. Thanks for your post, I find it very helpful
