The God Who Wasn't There Documentary :) - August 8th 2011, 07:11 AM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFsmmMTMCHU
I'm watching this now because I used to believe in God until reccent events (2 kittens died and a 16 year old boy commited suicide) made me realize that if God existed he wouldn't let that happen so therefore he must not exist and this documentary is reinforcing that

Everthing I see seems to be a lie. And everything you see in me you think is the truth. But, really all you see is what I'm masking the real me with. You never see me cry. Because I'll never let you. And you'll never see me die because I feel like I already have in a way.

"Is he willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then is he impotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then is he malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Whence then is evil?" -Hume

Really though, I would say there's an even simpler answer to the question of god: there is not, nor ever has been any sufficiently strong reason to think that one exists. Any argument past that is icing on the skeptical cake.

If you'd like to watch something much more cheerful though, I would point you toward Carl Sagan and his Cosmos. I don't know of anyone in history who has such a talent for making science both understandable and beautiful. Here's a link to the first episode:

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours and in time our atoms will return once again to reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend, and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

We'll agree to disagree on that one as I'm reluctant to hijack the thread - you and I both know the question is rarely, if ever, as simply resolved.

Keeping it on topic, what I would say is that the Jesus myth hypothesis espoused and defended in the film is widely discredited among scholars (both religious and non-religious), and in some retellings such as the Zeitgeist film it has also butchered other mythologies in the process. As such, I'd caution against relying too heavily upon it. What I would suggest is to keep an open mind and to do as much research as you can on all opinions, including those like the documentary Fletcher refers to, so that when you do come to your conclusion it is one you are fully content with and understand your reasoning for. Ultimately, that is what is most important.

"The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." - Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom

However bleak things seem, however insurmountable the darkness appears, remember that you have worth and nothing can take that away.
