Do you follow the same religion as your parents?

Just curious, because recently there was debate on whether my cousin should baptize the baby. He's Catholic, she's Baptist.

Re: Do you follow the same religion as your parents?

Yes I do, in that my parents have no religion, and neither do I.

Re: Do you follow the same religion as your parents?

I do not -- my parents are Catholics, and I'm a staunch atheist, much to their distaste.

My mother recently converted to Catholicism because I decided to convert.

Sorry I'm not of much help. :nosweat:

My mom's Atheist, my dad's Catholic, and I pretty much make up my own religion so I'm not Atheist or Catholic. xD

Re: Do you follow the same religion as your parents?

Parents are atheists, I'm an atheist. :)
And I'm not sure how Baptisms work, but the child can always change their religion, baptized or not. Are they mostly just arguing what religion to get them baptized under? I didn't even know there's a difference, is it a different holy water? I mean, I'm not sure if it matters. The child could always be rebaptized into whatever he/she wants.

The baby's grandparents what to baptize her Catholic, which is usually done pretty young. The baby's mom doesn't care, even though she is Baptist she said she was fine with it. But the baby's dad doesn't not want her baptized into either religion (though I know nothing about being Baptist). Hmm, I never thought about the holy water thing, I'm sure there is a difference just don't know how though.

EDIT: Misread the quoted material. xD

This is understandable, but is bound to cause problems if one is chosen above the other. Perhaps you should bring up to your cousin that baptism in a Christian faith only needs to be done once and, to my knowledge, applies to all Christian denominations (Matthew 28:19 -- forgot to mention that earlier).

When I have children of my own, I will likely choose a path that does not place certain religions as more important or valid than any others (depending on the religious inclinations of my potential wife). I don't want to influence my child whatsoever in the process of choosing a religion, or, otherwise, educate them about a variety of viewpoints -- both pros, and cons -- and let them come to a conclusion.

Re: Do you follow the same religion as your parents?

My parents are catholic, and so am I. However, this is not forced. When I was younger I constantly said that I did not believe in God, and did not consider myself a Catholic. As I got older, I decided I wanted religion to be a part of my life.

Re: Do you follow the same religion as your parents?

I think the parents shouldn't succumb to the pressure of the grandparents. It's their child, and from what you said... the mother doesn't care if the baby is baptized, and the dad doesn't want their child to be baptized...
While a Catholic baptism is usually done while you're young, and usually as a baby... you can still be baptized when you're older. As Jorge said, maybe you can talk to your friend and suggest they don't baptize their child but as they grow up... talk to them about both religions and/or other types of religion and let their child decide whether to become a religious person or not.

Yes, for a while I was out there some where not sure what to call myself. Now I am baptist like they are and staying with that. I was also Baptist when I was younger before I got stubborn for a few years.

Yes, and no.

My mom is the most Catholic person in our family, but even she isn't very religious. My dad used to be Catholic, but now holds interesting views.

Regardless, we are a very spiritual family. We may hold somewhat different concepts though.

Yes, but I didn't always and I do so now by choice. We're all pretty open minded towards other religions and those with no religion anyway so I'm happy enough.

I said no but it's both. My dad's a "Protestant". My mom doesn't have a religion. Neither do I really. I don't follow a specific religion. But my mom and I both believe in God. However, we refuse to live by the Bible. So I'm not sure what that makes us. Alls I know is we believe in God, heaven, miracles, angels, afterlife, etc. etc. So idk.

Nope. My parents are (non-practising) Christians, and I'm pagan.

My entire extended family is one small mob of godless heathens, happy to say.

Also, I'd like to point out that the poll here is badly worded and something of a false dichotomy; both "yes" and "no" answers imply that you and/or your parents follow some religion, which is obviously not always the case.

Believing in God, heaven, miracles, etc. adheres to the definition of a "religion", even if you don't subscribe to the specific practices proposed by an organized one. Just thought I'd point it out.

Not necessarily...answering "No" could apply to religious parents with atheistic children (or vice-versa), but with "Yes" it does always imply religious adherence, which is not always the case. What the survey also fails to address is when parents have differing religious views between themselves, which I'm finding relatively common from the responses here.

Yeah, it made sense at the time. Now I'm just confused.

My mom and I are both christians. My dad doesn't really have a religion. He believes in God I think, but that's about it. I'm the only one that's majorly into their religion at all. The only one that goes to church and all that stuff.

My parents are Catholics, they baptized me and that annoys me, should it not be my choice? Nope they do it when you're a baby. I am a nihilist (for the people who don't know what that is I am atheist.) I am strongly against religion and I find it funny that people still donate to an organisation that kept Ireland in the dark ages for so long.

My parents are Catholic and I am Catholic. I was baptized Catholic and went to Catholic school's all my life but around the time when I was in 7th grade my parents decided to let me pick what I wanted so I stopped going to mass and being an active member in my Church, then in High School around 9th I turned back to my Faith on my own because I wanted to no one forced me to.

Re: Do you follow the same religion as your parents?

Yes and no.

Yes, because we all claim to be Christians.

No, because they don't go to church every Sunday, and I don't see them practicing their faith. They do things I would consider immoral, they don't study God's word... based on everything I've seen, they're just Christians "in name", whereas I strive to actively pursue God's wishes for me on a daily basis.

Re: Do you follow the same religion as your parents?

I don't know what I am. My mom was raised Catholic and went to Catholic school and I don't know what my dad was raised in, but he went to Catholic school because of where he lived. They baptized me Catholic, but we never practiced except for Lent, which half the time I forgot about.

Now my mom's agnostic and I have no idea what my dad is so I've kind of created my own belief system, but I do believe in God.

My parents don't force us to be Catholic but I believe in God and Jesus no matter what. I think that my faith in God, Jesus and the whole concept of being Catholic, in a way, helped me through my treatment for OCD and depression.

Re: Do you follow the same religion as your parents?

Well, I recently had converted to Christianity (a year or two ago). However, when I initially started going, I was going to the churches that my grandfather would recommend. As my mom and stepdad believe in a God, but are more or less agnostic. But, I guess my mom could be considered a nominal Christian.

Anyways, as of now, I have a lot of disagreements with the Church and a lot of confusion because I do not want to follow blindly the doctrines put out by people. So, right now, I'm more of a independent Christian. I'm not really going to church. And, if you classified me as anything, I am a hyper-Calvinist, or a "Predestinarian." Which, you'll find a lot of people who profess to be Calvinists, but really, aren't because they believe in freewill. So, my beliefs even as a Christian, are quite contrary to most Christians, and my grandparents.

My dad's Catholic and my mom's Agnostic so I follow my mom but not because she pushed anything down my throat. My brother is atheist and my older sister is Christian. My parents didn't really have a say. XD

To answer this question, I was always taught that you can only get baptized once in your life, because it;s pretty much universal for all religions that have baptism.
For Catholic baptism, usually the whole family is there and they have a little ceremony with the godparents where they both send their blessings on the baby. Then both the mom and dad's side come up then they bless the baby. Finally the priest anoints the head of the baby with holy water and sends his blessings on the baby. Lots of stuff happens and it always seems really long to me.
Baptist I'm not sure what they actually do I looked it up and it just seems that they dip you in water and say a passage from the bible and they are done and move onto the next person. I'm not that sure.

For me both my parents and I are Catholics, though not practicing ones.

Re: Do you follow the same religion as your parents?

My parents are Christian but not very devoted, in that they go to church 1-3 times per year (excluding weddings, baptisms and funerals). I'm an anti-theist theological non-cognivist atheist. My parents don't have a problem with it at all, hell they encouraged me to believe in whatever religion (or lack thereof) I can identify with. They may not always like the fact other family members are deeply religious and I'm not, and they did at an early age try to push me toward Christianity but they've admitted it's a long lost cause.

Technically, you're only supposed to be baptized once, but I know there are people who are rebaptized if they decide to change religions. I know for Catholicism the baptism is meant to wash away the original sin that a baby is born with because of Adam and Eve, I don't know about other religions though. You're supposed to follow the religon you're baptized in for life and not change it, but I don't know many people who do that.

Re: Do you follow the same religion as your parents?

My whole family is Christian, some are methodist and some are catholic. I'm stuck between non-denominational and Episcopalian, but to me all that matters is the fact that I'm a Christian. But I know for a fact that my beliefs are not because of my family, because I went through a period of doubting as well. My beliefs may have started off because of my family, but I've become independent in them as well.
