Samhain! - October 18th 2011, 02:40 AM

So... what are people doing for Samhain, since it's coming up so soon?

Any specific rituals/feast/amazingness?

And, on a n00bish side-note, how do you pronounce Samhain?

First, there are many different ways to celebrate Samhain. This'll be my first time celebrating it too but a couple simple rituals I read about are the following:

-Make a small meal and offer a portion of it to the gods by burying some of your food and drink

-Lighting candles and honoring your ancestors (the original point of All Hallow's Eve)

And there are several ways of pronouncing the name :3 One is "Sow-een." Another is "Sow-an." Yet another I read is "Sar-win."

And one significance of Samhain for pagans (including Wiccans, Neo-pagans, Witches) is the pagan New Year. (basically our January 1st.) In other old religions (Celtic mostly) it is a time to celebrate ancestors and it is THE optimum time for spellcasting because the Veil between this world and the spirit world is at its thinnest, almost nonexistent, state.

I myself and going to have a small meal outside and pray to the gods for the safety of my Grandma Bobbie in the spirit realm.

So... yeah ^^ Ask me if you have questions about any other holidays or about paganism in general. you can PM me anytime :3

I've got plenty I'm doing on Samhain! My class I'm teaching is doing our own ritual in the afternoon, I'm doing my own afterwards. I do light candles during the ritual and keep a few of them burning afterwards for the rest of the night until morning. I bake, as well. I made my own Samhain recipe for it I'll also be going through trails in my woods for a few hours. And then, I go to my friend's house for a Halloween party and hand out candy

Cool!

Also, are there any candles that are proven not to set anything on fire while I sleep through the night? I'd much prefer it that I'd NOT wake my parents in the middle of the night on a Monday.

I'd say until you find a candle, and a tall container, along with a space where it won't be bumped and easily tipped over, maybe try using one of those tea light battery candles once you're ready for bed! I have candles that are in glass containers fit specifically for the candles themselves, and are tall enough that the flames won't nearly come close to the top I have a few friends that also put tall candles in tall pumpkins, and that works as well.. Safety!! Don't want your house to burn down!!

You don't need candles to help celebrate the holiday, if you don't want to use candles, either!! Pray for the God and Goddess, your ancestors, and friends that have passed on. Do what feels right to you Be outside raking leaves, carve pumpkins, bake, make your own ritual for that day... Whatever it is, I'm sure would be lovely Everyone has different rituals.

I think me and my friends are gonna be getting together for a small circle/ritual at a river by their house. (And by small i mean like 5 people as opposed to our normal 20 that attend.)

Samhain is a Wiccan/Celtic holiday, though it's celebrated by many other pagans.
It's celebrating the last harvest of autumn.
Yays.
