I feel so left out during Christmas times :( -
November 20th 2011, 04:17 PM
Everyone is so excited to see all their family and put up the tree and all the rituals. Ever since a young kid I've always been jealous. I've always wanted to celebrate Christmas but my family doesn't...we are Jewish so we celebrate Hanukah. Everywhere like the mall and a lot of businesses are all decorated with christmas this and christmas that and maybe here and there there's a small menorah but it just makes me feel bad. I wish I could buy that cool ornament and have a tree to put it on. My mom would like the stuff that in that stocking...but I can't give her a stocking. Does anyone else feel this way?! People are all like oh well snowmen are winter not just Christmas so you can buy those decorations but it's just like well they in red and green why aren't their any snowmen in blue and white?! Am I the only one this left out?!

What does red and green have to do with Christmas? They're just chosen symbols, they don't mean anything really. Anyway, you can buy most Christmas orniments in silver, like tree ones, lights, etc. You can just hang oriments around. Better yet, have a Hanukah tree. Just because it's been adapted into a Christian holiday doesn't mean you can't use it. Nowhere in the nativity story does it mention the giving of presents or the hanging of lights or trees, that's all been adapted later on. Who says Judaism cannot adapt similair traditions?
Maybe instead of stockings compile gift baskets filled with stocking type things like magazines, candies, maybe a movie, gift cards etc. Just replace the stocking with a small basket, it's the same idea, but should respect your religious values. Really none of the stereotypical Christmas stuff has to do with true Christian Christmas, so it's not like you'll be celebrating a Christian holiday all about Jesus. Because truly, it's all been added later. - Justin ![]() |

Yeah I guess you're right I just kind of wish that everything wasn't mostly directed toward Christmas.

The modern day Christmas isn't really a Christian thing. It's a corporate thing. Buying people stuff and going into debt? That's not what the holidays are about. The holidays are about spending time with family, and being generous, what both holidays have.
I wouldn't worry too much about it.

My girlfriend is Jewish and she celebrates Christmas and I do as well even though I'm not Christian. We celebrate it because that's what we were raised celebrating and don't want to let go of that. Many non-Christians celebrate Christmas, it's just without the "Christ". I don't consider it a Christian holiday either way, just because it was originally a Pagan holiday that was later adapted to Christianity.
And no matter how you look at it religiously, now a days it's just turned into a commercial holiday based around presents and food. Which I think is really shameful

Honestly, my family isn't Christian but we celebrate Christmas. Yeah, most of us believe in Christ but we aren't religious like that... But we do buy each other gifts and spend time together. That's what it's become. Family time. Maybe when you get older and you have your own family you can just celebrate Christmas but not call it that?
