Exclamation 2012, what you think? - December 29th 2011, 07:49 AM

Who believes that the world will end in 2012? And, if you think it will not end.. please give your reasons why? I'm kinda scared it will. lol

Re: 2012, what you think? - December 29th 2011, 08:53 AM

I assume this is the Mayan calender scare of 2012, to which I have four predictions of what will happen. First, on that day, people who believe this will associate every negative event with the world ending and it'll be all over the news. Second, that day will end just like any other day and the individuals who thought the world would have ended will feel like a bunch of paranoid morons. Third, someone else will come along and give another crackpot theory as to why and when the world will end. Lastly, there will be yet another movie revealing how the world does not end and may suggest a new crackpot theory.

I don't believe the world will end on the particular day because the entire fear is based on a misinterpretation of the Mayan calender. The premise is the Mayan calender ends so that means the world will end, however, this ignores the fact the Mayan calender has ended around 14 times and each time, the world did not end. Here's a brief article containing quotes from experts who study the Mayan calender and astronomy:
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science...aya-2012_n.htm

Furthermore, I do not believe the world will end on that day because it is a crackpot doomsday theory, and just like all the previous ones (i.e. Y2K), the world did not end.

Overall, it's a marketing scheme because there is the movie aptly named "2012" as well as a plethora of books that have sold like hot cakes.
Imagine a commercial for a new Coca Cola flavour that advertises it as the "drink that will save you from the end of the world". It's fear-based marketing and many people would buy it so they will continue to live. If you remember Y2K, people were advised to stockpile food and water. The Coca Cola commercial is the exact same thing. Michelle, ask yourself, if you saw that commercial, would you go to the store (or encourage your parents to go if you don't have the money) and stockpile bottles and cans of the new flavour? If you wouldn't, then you've implied the 2012 scare is nothing more than a nonsense crackpot theory.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

If the Mayans themselves (or their descendents at least) aren't buying it, I don't see why I should. Personally I think we have some kind of cultural fetish for self-destruction, given how many times the end of the world has been predicted in my own lifetime...

My reasons to believe the world won't end have already been mentioned. If decendants aren't even convinced, I don't see why I should be worried. I occasionally think 'hmm what if it actually happened', but I seriously doubt it will.

Re: 2012, what you think? - December 29th 2011, 02:21 PM

I worry about it, sure, but I try not to. Many predictions have been made that the world will end in my lifetime, and look, I'm still here, and so are all of you. At the end of the day, I don't think anyone can predict the world will end. If it ends, it ends. There's no point worrying over something we may not be able to change in my opinion because if it's going to happen, it will happen, no matter how much we sorry. So no, I don't really believe it will end because the Mayans predicted it, but I don't believe it wont end, because in my point of view there's just as much a chance it will end tomorrow. At least, thats the way I see it.

If that made any sense at all. I tend to waffle on.

Why should anyone give a reason to not believe in something? (For instance, one could easily ask you why you don't believe that the world will end on the third Tuesday in February of 2012, but you'd just say that there's no reason to believe such a thing.)

There is absolutely no reason to believe that the world will end on any specific day, year, or decade. Hundreds upon hundreds of doomsday predictions have been made throughout history, and guess what - we're still here. It's not going to change anytime soon, and I don't need to modify that stance until I'm given a valid reason to do so. The Mayan calendar reasoning is completely moot, as The Man has already addressed. I haven't heard any that even come close to being convincing.

No, the world will not end.
Why? Because a ton of other scientists have tried to play god before
and predict the end of the world. As you can see I am still living.
Thus the world has not ended nor will it.

Pah thats what I think to 2012. I don't the world is going to end just because some calandar runs out. Calanders run out every year what makes this calander so speical, it'll run out, we'll still be here, and then some other scientist will go ' Oh we survived well the world will now end on blah blah blah such a date' And we'll go Pah. And if the world ends it ends, nothing we can do to stop it, it goes boom , we go boom , bye bye human race.

Honestly the world is not going to end, calanders run out every year. And every year the world is said to about 3 times each year. Well We're still here , I don't see why on at midnight on the 1st january the world will go ' ooh look the mayans predicted the end of the world I must explode BOOM' I just don't see that happening.

Haha, okay. The reason why I said that.. is because well, I'm a stupid kid. And, I need someone to reassure me so I don't go mad crazy next year. Okay, I reaseached it last night... the world will not end. But, still... it is scary to think that it might even though there is nothing you can do to stop it. Like, someone having major cancer.. there's nothing they can do to stop it? So, they're not supposed to be scared that they might die? That might not be a good example.. it's just something that popped off the top of my head when you said something in the 1st paragraph.

Personally, I think the world coming to an end is a crock of shit that no one in their right mind should take seriously.

is there a legitimate reason for it to?

Oh and so what if it actually does... death is a destination everyone shares I guess so its not like we'd be able to stop it

the end of the world because of a calendar is trivial

I'll go ahead and clarify things for those who don't know I've done a LOT of research on this topic, because the idea was the the world was supposed to end on my birthday. lol

Basically, the Mayans had a different religious viewpoint on humanity than we did. One of the things they believed in was an evolution type deal, but much fast than the evolution we're used to. Think Pokemon. In short terms, the Mayans never predicted the end of the world, the end of the human race, or ANYTHING BAD. If fact, according to the Mayans, the human race is supposed to EVOLVE onto the next cycle. A cycle for them was just like... a century for us really. Except for them, each time they moved onto a new cycle, the human race evolved into better people, physically, mentally, or emotionally.

So in short terms, the world isn't going to end. If the Mayans are correct, we're supposed to become better people on December 21st, 2012.

I think the mayans just ran out of room. That's my explination. I'm glad to hear, though, that people who have done more research than I have are saying that the world will not end.

Remember that Harold Camping guy that thought the world was going to end last may? All his billboards got taken down the day after the world was going to end and new ones went up that said "well that was awkward"

The end of the world could start at any time, and I personally do think it likely could be relatively soon (meaning in our life time)...but I don't believe that any human can know for sure, and it would be a huge coincidence if it happens in 2012- it will have nothing to do with the Mayan calendar.

Even if it does the world will have ended and we won't be here to know or be sad about it anyway. There is no point living in worry that the world is going to end, if anything you should live life to the full in case the world does end.

The last line was of questionable content. Life will end eventually, that is inevitable, even for out planet. However the chances of it happening in OUR lifetime is slim to none and the chances of predicting it is impossible.

The sun WILL die eventually. The ice caps WILL melt eventually. The ice age WILL happen eventually. Nuclear war is likely to happen eventually. predicting it is just silly..
