Missing Out On Life? - January 2nd 2012, 07:33 PM

What do you think makes life really worthwhile?

I don't know anymore, but I do know that many people say one thing but then in practice do not really value it. For example, many people say that family is very important, but then most do not spend very much time with their family (and instead choose to spend most of their time doing other things like watching television. facebook, etc.).

For me, the unconditional love from my boyfriend is what makes my life worth living. I don't have a good family relationship, my mother constantly verbally abuses me and I don't have siblings to go to because I'm an only child. My haven is my boyfriend's house, where I feel safe.

Life itself is what keeps me going. I like to take walks through the park and think about things. All living creatures are important.

The outdoors. My dog. Rain. Silly things. Really simple stuff, to be honest.

The moment at the end of your life where you're able to look back at all the good and the bad and say that you did more than survive, but thrived, is when life actually becomes worthwhile.

If you've ever questioned your life about whether it's "really worth it," then you're not really doing the things you'd like to do. Thriving is not holding back from doing something that you'd like to do but feel that you wouldn't be able to do it...like traveling to another place, quitting an addiction, or anything. If you don't do anything meaningful in life, you're not really living. To thrive, you have to live by doing things that you'd like to do, and work towards being the best that you can be.

Not necessarily. There's a difference between objectively questioning your life, and having doubts about your existence. The former is done by philosophers and people who like to think, and the latter is done by people in general.

Yes, I am an asshole. I am the person that's going to call you out on what you say and not pull punches. Instead of getting hurt about it, why not think, question, and learn?

So people who have doubts about life never "think?" Don't you think it's also possible for people who have doubts about life are able to question their existence objectively? I would assume it's possible for both.

Oh, definitely. Generally speaking, though- the average Joe doesn't like to think about his existence, or question the beliefs he was born with.

In this, Dan Ariely talks about organ donorship: how some countries have higher rates of organ donors, and he sets out to find why. It turns out, for most people, they'll take whatever the default option is on the form. And this happens across the board.
