Here's a breakdown of my reactions.
:24 Jesus came to abolish religion? Then why did he say, ""Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." Basically he said to continue following the Old Testament, as well as him. :49 Some interesting points raised about why religion builds big buildings instead of feeding the poor and look down their noses at single mothers. Too bad he doesn't come back to these points. 1:10 Just realized this monologue rhymes. 1:41 Claims he acted like a "church kid" while being "addicted" to pornography. I didn't know that was possible... 2:35 Jesus doesn't support self-righteousness? Could've fooled me. 2:46 Jesus and religion on opposite sides of a spectrum, religion an invention? Seems like this kid needs to Google religion. Jesus is a religious figure and center-point of a major religion- and you can't tell me they're opposites. 3:09 wait wait.... "Religion is man searching for god... and Christianity is God searching for man...." Christianity is a religion you dope. That is all. |

Hm. He makes some pretty great points. My first reaction can be taken from the highest rated comment: "You can call your interpretation of Christianity a relationship, but it's still a religion." To me, he's the newest in a long line of men to discover the "true" meaning of Christ. It's nothing new.
Here's where I don't see eye to eye with him. He says he does this to highlight the difference between Jesus and false religion. Well, who is he, in the face of all the faiths out there, to say that his and his alone is the only true or correct one? Moreover, I simply can't stand for this whole relationship with sin that Christianity gives us. I think it's the height of foolishness for any God to allow billions, trillions to be born with "inherent sin." In the same way I don't have to do jail time for my father's crimes, I shouldn't be subject to punishment because of the sins of Adam and Eve. I also think it's amazingly convenient, when you consider objectively the story of Christ's death and what it accomplished. The thought that we are all imperfect, and through him we don't have have to worry about being in good standing with God. Personally, if there were a God, I would want him to judge me based on how I treated others, on how I loved without restrain, on how I chose to use the cognitive facilities that he gave me to question his very existence and think of reasons good enough to support it. I would want him to judge me based on that, and not not how many Sundays I came to church and prayed for his forgiveness for an apparent wrongdoing that I had no hand in. I wouldn't want God to think of me as one of the countless individuals he created to flatter his ego. I would want God to think of me as someone who did their best, and who above all, thought about the universe and my relationship to it. But this is all my opinion. Yes, I am an asshole. I am the person that's going to call you out on what you say and not pull punches. Instead of getting hurt about it, why not think, question, and learn?

It's generally modern conservative protestants who refer to Christianity as a relationship. Ironically, the Apostle Paul even called Christianity a religion. The early Church called it a religion, and the early reformers called it a religion. I don't know why people think religion has a negative spin to it. They insist on giving religion a different definition than it is. It's funny, even the definition they use, "man trying to achieve G-D's forgiveness," is still a relationship, and is still the Christian message. Even worse, they insist Christianity is the only religion where G-D reaches down to man. Yet, this is even the message of the Qu'ran.
As far as finding the true meaning of Christianity, just look at the early Church. The Bible teaches us to look at the roots to find truth. Christianity, compared to.the early Church, is no longer Christianity. This is part of the reason I say I seek to be a Christian, but I am not one, and I am still an agnostic to the g-d of modern protestant and catholic churches. Is your G-D really G-D?
Is my G-D really G-D? I think our G-D isn't G-D, if He fits inside our head. |

Here's a pretty good, if a bit abrasive breakdown and criticism of this video.
