Question for Atheists. - March 13th 2012, 04:00 PM

Can an Atheist believe in God?
I was talking with a friend and he said he was an Atheist and I asked him why we had a rosary around his neck and he told be be believed in God, I told him technically he couldn't be both but than he told me he was just and Atheist that believes in God which left me wondering if that was possible and since I know there are many Atheist here in TH I've come to ask if it was true or am I missing something about Atheism that I don't know.

No. Your friend is terribly misinformed. Let me break down the word "Atheism" for you.

A- this prefix means without. You can relate it the meaning not, or without.

theos- The Greek word for deity or god.

Your friend is a walking, talking contradiction.

I agree with Toz, it's more likely your friend's faith is undecided or the belief in a deity without worship. He can't believe in the concept of a God in general, as many God concepts from other religions contradict each other, he must have one in particular he pictures so if it were the Christian God, that would make him a non-practicing Christian. If he simply believe there may be a God out there, but doesn't care to find out which one (Undecided on his faith) he's likely Agnostic.

Sounds like, as Toz says, your friend has got the wrong end of the stick when it comes to atheism. That said, I suppose there is room for someone to claim to be "without God" if they reject the notion of worshipping a deity while still allowing for his existence - but that isn't how atheism is understood these days. That's more the original Greek version of the word. So no, I don't think it quite works in your friend's case, unfortunately.

Your friend could just be an agnostic and not know it.

I told him today what you said and he said he still stands, maybe he is a walking troll I don't know or maybe a Christian inside the closet. =/

If he can look at the very definition of what an atheist is, and then still claim to be one, then he's even more confused than I thought.

This is just a shot in the dark but by any chance is he saying he's "A Theist" or is he really saying he's "AN Atheist"?

No he said AN Atheist we were speaking in Spanish and I would have noticed the difference
It just took me out of place when he told me we was an atheist but had a rosary on I wasn't expecting that an atheist with a rosary.

Maybe he's just a skeptic- some still do believe in God. or maybe he believes in god, but not the perception that religions have?

He's not an atheist, athesists do not believe in God, not just a Christian God or Jesus or whatever. They don't believe, at all. Guess he is sort of a deist, somebody who believes in a deity though not in a particular organized religion. If he doesn't want to admit it, let him live ignorant. It's not your problem. Then he wouldn't be an atheist would he?
Because if you believe in God but not the idea of religion you are a theist.

Your friend is funny It's like saying "I'm a vegetarian but eat meat every week"

He can have a non theistic god like the ideas of pantheism (the universe is god)
