Arrow I belive; Feedback needed please! - September 4th 2012, 11:48 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of eating disorders, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

In my english class, we were asked to write a 300-350 word writing sample about something we believe in. It's due Thursday, and I would love to know what you think.

I believe in the power of positivity. Finding a reason to laugh, smile, and just generally be happy is what helps me and many others survive each and every day. I personally use this key element of my personality to guide and help me on the road to recovery from an eating disorder, otherwise known as Bulimia Nervosa. I cannot pin-point the day I decided to eat less and less, throw up everything I ate, eat so much I physically could not eat anymore, or that I was unbeautiful. I can tell you, however, how this eating disorder, and bump in the road of life has changed me as a person.
Most people are surprised when I tell them about my eating disorder. I don’t look like the stereotypical person to suffer from this horrendous mental illness, but regardless, I still do. Due to a health condition, which messes with my metabolism and insulin use, when I started eating again, I gained 2 times what I had lost with my eating disorder (EDITED), so I am now physically overweight.
Thanks to therapy, and the power of positivity I am on the road to recovery. I have learned that everything about an eating disorder is negative. Believing you weigh too much, that you are fat, useless, worthless, and a disappointment is what powers the eating disorder. So in order to recover, I have to focus on the happy and positive parts of everyday. Staying positive is extremely hard, but so incredibly rewarding. Feeling the sun on my skin after school, talking to my boyfriend on the phone, and just being alive are a few examples of positive thinking. If I had let this disorder run my life for good, I would be dead. I’m thankful for every day that I am alive, and that I get the chance to learn to love myself and be happy. I believe in the power of positivity.

Thank you again!
