tape recording

After a long bout of writer's block. I tried to write this. IDK.

Somewhere deep down inside an old rusty water well
A child sits at the bottom there
She wants to be held, she wants to be saved from, this
cold, dark lonely hole in the ground

She splashes out of the water and begins to climb the bricks; she slips and slides back in
A tape recorder plays the words "you will never win" over and over again
What would make her see she has a fire in her that wants igniting?
What would inspire her to spark her own light?

The strength it takes to remove the tape
and the courage to put a new one in it's place
Takes up so much time, energy, faith
She does not know how to dance to music; to dance is to keep hope alive
how will she survive a new song?
A song of joy and love and goodness
A song that is sad with pain but beautiful with appreciation for life
A song that expresses the depth of her soul; something she didn't know she had
When all she knew was emptiness, loss and abandonment
how small she was; she thought she could be engulfed by the world and eaten up in one bite
She had been reduced to muffled noise;
Kids playing hear screeching from the well and dare each other to go near it.
"Maybe it is a werewolf!" they would say between giggles.

No longer did she trust in herself, that she had a voice
and a song worth sharing. And when the chance came to climb out again,
she wondered if it were even worth trying?
"I can easily slip back into the water" she would say.
What would make her see there's a window; an opportunity that can allow her new possibilities?
People to reach out to; friendships; connecting with others?
Or was it a mirror reflection?
What would make her believe there's a tunnel; that she can escape and get through the other side?
Or was it a cave with a dead end?

She tried to weigh out which would be scarier;
Trying and failing repeatedly or not trying at all and not finding out
"I have to start somewhere"
she announced this slightly louder and steadier than her usual shakey whisper,
In the background, there is the tape recording still playing,
"You will never win. You will never win. You will nev-"
She pressed the Pause button.

Re: tape recording

I like the ending, because it was like ignoring what that was saying to you and telling it to go away pretty much

The symbolism and extended metaphor is fantastic. I feel like if someone could set this to music, it would be a really inspirational song!

Ooh, I really like the story that is told here and I like when she pauses the tape recorder. The positivity is uplifting.
