Unrequited Love

What is love, that which is unrequited?
It is a feeling, and a strong one at that.
It grabs you by the throat, holds you up against a wall and kicks you a dozen times.
Yet you endure it.

We do it because of that feeling, Love.
The hardest to come by, yet the most sought after emotion.
It is because everyone falls in love with the wrong person.
You fall in love with the person who has the most power over you.
The one that can hurt you the most.

We fall into this blissful feeling of love, not knowing where it will bring us.
The path it leads to can be one of three places.

The first place is the most sought after.
Hoping that you are “the one” for them.
Destined to be with them, even if it’s not forever.
It’s at least to the time where they know how they should be loved.
Not abused or taken advantage of,
Like you’ve seen them go through with others.

The second place is dejection, with not seeing them often.
Much less sought after, and forever engraved into your mind.
It hurts, like a knife going through your heart.
Over and over again.

The third, and perhaps the most painful, is the all too popular friend-zone.
The place where you have to pretend to be happy.
Even though they don’t return your feelings, they hope you don’t care.
Or that you can let go of your feelings, which is harder than people care to think.

The friend-zone is the worst place to be, because they never seem to look there.
Not for dating anyway.
You would do absolutely anything for them though.
And they either ignore it, or don’t know that you love them.

What is love, that which is unrequited?
If you were to answer “The worst feeling in the world,”
You’ve answered wrong, because it is so much worse.
It feels much worse than anything someone can go through.
Yet people do so every day.

I'm sorry but when I saw "What is love?" I had to sing in my head "Baby don't hurt me. Don't hurt me.....no mo"

But, this is very well written.

I hate you. Now I have "WHAT IS LOVE!? BABY DON'T HURT ME! DON'T HURT ME! NOMO!" stuck in my head.

I like this also. It's orderly, organized well. You've presented your thoughts on unrequited love in a reasonable, systematic manner. Despite this, you've managed to convey the pain of the speaker, who "pretend[s] to be happy". Well done. : )
