STD testing... scared - April 28th 2012, 07:35 PM

so, i figure it's about time i had a checkup. But i'm absolutely petrified.

My sister said that it's really painful. And that they put a metal thing inside to open you up- and that it tears and really hurts.

Can someone give me some information. About what it actually is.

I also feel incredibly awkward. Do i just walk into the clinic and be like i want a checkup?

What you are describing is called a pap smear. And, it's not metal. They got rid of the metal ones a long time ago as it's very unhealthy and unsanitary because they are reused between people. They use plastic, easy to dispose ones now, and it doesn't really hurt. It's a bit uncomfortable, but there isn't much pain. But, that's not really the way they test for STD's. That's how they see if things are in working order down there. STD testing is done through blood tests, and sometimes through urine.

Gonorrhea and chlamydia: Urine Test
HIV, syphilis, herpes (not always conclusive) and hepatitis: Blood Test
HPV: Pap Shmear, but not always conclusive.

There's an idea of how they test for different ones. Getting it all done would not be a bad idea, pap smears are not so bad as I've heard. I'm getting mine Monday if you'd like some advice then from a more...experienced person, I can tell you how mine goes. TMI, I'm aware, but just letting you know. As for testing, urine tests are quite easy, and if you're not too squeamish, so is blood. They're not bad, and a very good idea to do. And then, whether or not you're tested or not, avoid having to go as often by using barriers and communicating with your partner and requiring them to be tested regularly as well.

For pap smears, they're honestly not all that bad. Maybe a bit uncomfortable, but they don't take long & it's bearable. Just try to relax & it'll be over & done with in no time.
