Uncomftorable down under? - July 26th 2012, 04:41 AM

I always feel so self conscious about my vagina. Especially sense no ones ever been down there. I'm nervous that theyre not gonna like it or there's something wrong with. I kinda blame porn for it because theyre vaginas look so nice. And when I look down its not the same. ( plus I don't watch ebony porn and I'm black so our vaginas are going to look different, but I'm so used to white people's) I dint ven know how to explain it. But here's some questions I have about maintenance down there.

How can I not get razor bumps. And why do I get them (so I can avoid it)

What are some tips to having it smell pleasant. ( I personally don't like the natural vagina smell)

How do I shave by the vagina lips and get most of the hair?

You guys don't have to answer it all. I just want to be more comftorable down under.

I'm going to direct you to Laci Green, because she answers many questions like these. Here's one vid about smell:

It's not a very good idea to change the smell. It's natural (unless from an STI) and therefore no shame should come from it.

Hey there Nala
I'm sure yours looks just fine! We tend to be harsh on our own areas of our body and the truth is we shouldn't even compare ourselves to others. You're perfect just the way you are, remember that. <3

Razor marks? Are you shaving down there? I wouldn't suggest shaving in that area for multiple reasons. You could cut yourself, plus like you mentioned it doesn't look right. What you probably see in porn movies is the perfect bikini wax and you can get a waxing done at your local hair studio. & Trust me it looks so much more better! But I wouldn't suggest a bikini wax unless you are or will be intimate with somebody soon. & Your younge so don't sweat it.

Each girl has a particular vaginal smell; it is natural. Even when you notice a recent difference in its smell, it is not necessarily an infection. That change may be linked to a specific moment of your menstrual cycle because the smell of your vagina can vary depending on the time of the cycle. I would suggest getting special femine wipes for that area and clean it once or twice a day if it helps any

Like I mentioned above the bikini wax. Go to the local Hair Salon and see if they offer the bikini wax and ask them how they handle that area. But like I also mentioned above this isn't absolutly necessary if you are not planning to be intimate but if this helps make you feel better in the long run. Go for it!

& That is completely understandable. You can do all of these if you'd like. It is important to feel comfortable. I hope I helped some! If you have any more questions feel free to PM me Have a nice day & Take care <3

How can I not get razor bumps. And why do I get them (so I can avoid it)
Shaving is difficult to do down there. I do it, at least once a week, but if you begin shaving down there, you have to keep up with it since if you let it get "wild" again, then it's going to continue to be difficult. The first few times, it might cause some irritation, which will result in razor burn. But, if you're going to shave, and want to avoid having razor burn, which is where the bumps come from, shave in the direction in which the hair grows. Make sure you use a moisturizing (preferably unscented) shaving cream and make sure the razor is new, with a new blade on there. And, make sure the blade is changed every few weeks to ensure it's the sharpest it could be.

What are some tips to having it smell pleasant. ( I personally don't like the natural vagina smell)
As the above mentioned, we all have a particular smell, that is natural. There is nothing we can really do to help that. Practicing good hygiene however can limit the smell. Trust me, no one is really going to notice it, especially if you're going to be intimate with someone. It will be the furthest thing from their mind. You could always try using a feminine wash like Summer's Eve or Vagisil washes to help with the smell, but they're scented, and per my own doctor, it's advised not to use them since scented soaps and washes can lead to bacterial infections (I know, I get them all the time).

How do I shave by the vagina lips and get most of the hair?
With this, you just need to be really careful. What I do is sit in the bathtub, with my legs spread and try to get as much as the hair as possible. Then, I sit in front of a full length mirror, or check with a handheld mirror to make sure I got the hair. If not, I just shave whatever is left behind. You need to be super careful, since the area is really sensitive. Going slow, and moving in one direction will help make sure you don't get any cuts.

I wouldn't worry about half the stuff you're worried about. Being clean shaven, and worrying about what your vagina looks like is going to be the last thing on a guy's mind if you're being intimate with this person. If they DO care, they aren't the right person for you.

How can I not get razor bumps. And why do I get them (so I can avoid it)

Quote from ehow.com: "Razor bumps are more likely to occur after an extremely close shave. The act of shaving sharpens the end of the hair, making it more likely to pierce the skin and become ingrown as the hair grows longer. Curly hair is more likely to result in razor bumps than straight hair, as it grows out and then curls back towards the skin rather than growing directly out of the skin. Once the hair pierces the skin and begins to grow, the body fights the hair as if it were an infection. This results in a pimple, known as a razor bump."

A way to avoid razor bumps is to shave WITH the grain instead of against it, use lots of shaving cream, and use a fresh razor when you shave.

What are some tips to having it smell pleasant. ( I personally don't like the natural vagina smell)

Vaginas don't smell like rose gardens. They each have their own scent. Using scented soaps and perfumes and such down there is actually not good for it at all. Check out Laci Green on Youtube, like maddi said. She's awesome, and explains it all.

How do I shave by the vagina lips and get most of the hair?

Use a fresh razor when you do it, and be very careful so you don't get any nicks or anything. Use lots of shaving cream, and shave with the grain to avoid getting the razor bumps.

Regarding the stuff about how your vagina looks: Every vagina is different! Sometimes the inner lips (labia minora) are bigger and hang down more, sometimes they're super small. The labia majora (the outer lips) are sometimes bigger or smaller. The labia minora can be all kinds of colours from pink to very dark. Everybody's is different, and be PROUD of your vagina. It's part of your body and part of who you are. If anybody doesn't like it, they obviously don't care about you enough to be down there anyways. Be proud of your body and love it for what it is. You can find blogs like this online that are non-sexual but just about loving diversity in body shape/size/colour/whatever.

Hope I've been of some help Take good care!

People have answered things quite sufficiently, but I'm just going to add a bit.

How can I not get razor bumps. And why do I get them (so I can avoid it)
This might be just me, but razor bumps have become less of a problem for me the longer that I've been shaving. When I first started, my mons pubis (the top of the vulva) literally looked like it had an STI, it was just covered. Now, I barely get them at all. To help, I'd suggest using a sharp razor, and more shaving lotion or soap. Last, shaving is not necessary, even if you're intimate. Not all partners prefer it, and if you don't like doing it...don't.

What are some tips to having it smell pleasant.
The vagina does have a natural smell, think of it as an aroma. It's really mostly noticable to you, and a little more potent when on your period, but it's not as bad as you think. However, for tips, I'd recommend washing every day with soap. I would not recommend using any products on it. For me, I tried Summers Eve a few years ago (the "sensitive skin" type), and I got a horrible rash from it, so I highly discourage these. If you choose to use a soap, choose unscented products. I personally use unscented Dial soap every few days, and ONLY on my external vulva (no where near my urethra or vaginal opening.) Don't EVER douche, it's horrible for your pH levels and keeping healthy bacteria in there.

How do I shave by the vagina lips and get most of the hair?
I liked Jen's mirror idea. I just try my best, and when I get out of the shower and notice I missed something, I just do it the next day. I'm not picky about this, and so aren't most partners you'll be with, so don't worry so much.
