STI fear -
April 19th 2010, 11:23 AM
Ok, so basically I had unprotected sex about 2 weeks ago (Yes, i know it was v. dumb! NEVER AGAIN.) I didn't know the guy that well which doesn't help as I therefore don't know much about his sexual history...
I hadnt really had any symptoms after (i had abdominal pain last week although that could have been because i was on my period) but im aware you dont always get symptoms. I went to get tested a couple of days ago for STI's but am now having to wait for two weeks before they ring me to let me know the results. Basically i need some piece of mind in the mean time. They took a urine sample and blood sample (i was all prepared for a swab aswell but for some reason they didn't) anywayyy, ive developed a sore throat and cough over last couple of days (bearing in mind ive been developing a cold for last few weeks anyway) and also i have had abdominal pain even since ive finsihed my period, although this could also be because i havent been eating that well recently; just little bits here and there. Basically i'm very confused. I can't tell whether these are symptoms of STI/STD's or just down to what ive stated it could be instead. I know you guys can't tell me obv whether i do or i don't but any help would be appreciated. I have A Level exams and c/w deadlines coming up and I fear that this is going to affect these due to worrying. Oh and just for the record, i don't usually sleep with random men. Ive only had sex with one other person (and that was my ex-boyfriend) --> WHO im still kind of 'seeing' which makes this situation more complicated... |

Okay, keep in mind that I don't know that much about STIs, but I haven't heard of STI symptoms coming on that quickly. I think the most serious ones usually have no symptoms, like chlamydia, or take a while to develop really bad symptoms, like HIV/AIDS. So, whilst it is possible that you could have caught something from him, I don't think your symptoms are related (except possibly because of stress). You could always ask the guy about his history though if that would make you feel better?
Also, have you had a pregnancy test done? I know you said that you had your period, but since you had sex so close to your period, it might still be possible? Fairly unlikely, but you might want to do a test just in case. Dreaming about the day When you wake up and find That what you're looking for Has been here the whole time. |

Thanks for your reply, however I can't really ask him about his history since I havent kept in contact with him. Yes, i feel morally guilty about this. :/ I know that he said he had had around 6 sexual partners, whether that's true; i don't know.
Ive attempted googling and what worried me was the HIV "flu like symptoms" a few weeks after getting the disease, but i don't know whether i'm being overly paranoid and since yes you are right, i think it usually takes more than a couple of weeks. Oh thats another question also; even though it may take months to actually have symptoms does that mean that the tests might not pick up on any STI's? Since as i stated in my original post how i went to get tested only two weeks after possibly catching one? |

With STI tests, you should have one and then have another one done in six months time. That makes sure that you are actually clear of the STIs that they test for. So don't have unprotected sex within the next six months until you get the all clear.
Keep in mind though, that some STIs can't be tested for. Genital herpes, for example, can only be diagnosed during an outbreak. So you need to make sure that if you have any weird symptoms in your genital area, that you go get them checked out straight away. But try not to freak out every time that you're a little bit itchy or something, as hard as it might be to keep a level head. Also, did you have a pregnancy test done? Dreaming about the day When you wake up and find That what you're looking for Has been here the whole time. |

Ok, thanks; yeah i don't plan on having unprotected sex again anytime soon!
No, i havent had a pregnancy test. He pulled out before he came but i know that that method isn't always effective (pre-cum and whatnot) so yes i think i will take a test just to be on the save side. |

1. Definitely take a pregnancy test- or call your doctor so that he can check too with the samples you gave him.
2. Take a deep breath and relax. Googling what you could and could not have is not going to change the reality of whatever situation you are in. A LOT of STI/STD's are curable and the others are treatable. You can have a perfectly normal life if you conduct basically any STI/STD. Assuming the worst is really not something you should do- it's just causing unneeded stress on your body. I can understand why you might be really scared, and I wish I could give you a hug or something, but just try to take deep breaths and move on with your life. When the doctor calls and tells you what's up, then you can deal with whatever (or nothing) at that point in time. Everything will be okay =] Try using the theory "mind over matter", if you keep thinking you are sick... you might just GET sick. So have a positive attitude. Make sure to be getting a lot of fluids and vitamin c in your diet as well. All the best, -Amy ![]() |
