Question Postponing period - May 6th 2011, 06:17 AM

Hey,

Is there a way to stop a period, postpone it, make it lighter, etc.?

This month or next month, at some time in the month, I'll probably know a week in advance, I am going to have a Krav Maga Level 1 test. It could last as long as 9 hours. I CAN'T have my period for that test. There is no way. That would be awful.
Also, if I had cramps, I don't know what I would do. My cramps get bad. Last month, I almost fainted. I've postponed birth control cause it seems like such a hassle and stuff, but now I wish I had gotten it.

Any tips? At all?

As far as I know, there is no way to make it completely stop or make it lighter without using birth control. On two or three occasions, I have stopped my period from coming one month, by skipping taking the placebo pills, and just starting a new pack. I don't advise doing this often, but it's ok to do so once in a while for certain occasions such as yours.

A 9 hour test would still require you to change your tampon and/or pad frequently, anyway. The people administering the test should be able to comply, and I'm sure there will be bathroom breaks during the testing period. They cannot legally you keep you from using the bathroom, as that could be potentially harmful to you.

There's not really a lot you can do, unless you're on the pill. To make yourself feel better during it though you can try and drink lots of water and eat lots of fruit in the days coming up to your period, as this can help with bloating.

Thanks for the responses.

The official date for the test is actually June 18th. If I went on birth control now, would my period be light by June or not?
Also, I read that taking Provera can stop your period? Is this true?

A 9 hour Krav Maga test!? I might want to rethink about doing it......

But I am no expert on periods, but I have heared that Birth Control can make you have lighter periods.

Re: Postponing period - May 7th 2011, 03:58 PM

It could take up to 9 hours. It could be as little as 3 hours. It totally depends on how everyone is doing. I am very pumped and excited for it. I've been training like crazy for it.

Plus the people running the test are men so having to tell them I was on my period would be very very awkward haha.
Yeah, I know about the birth control thing, but I think it's a little too late to go on birth control for that specific event.

Surely they're legally required to let you have at least one toilet break? As for cramps, you could probably go to your doctor and ask for a precription for mefenamic acid - it attacks the enzymes that cause contractions (and cramps) and is really effective - I've been taking it since november - but you can't take Ibuprofen based medicines with it, if, for instance, you get back ache or anything with your period. I should imagine that birth control takes more than a month to really affect your period, but I've never tried it, so I can't guaruntee anything

Re: Postponing period - May 7th 2011, 04:08 PM

You wouldn't be able to start taking the birth control until the Sunday after your next period, that way it will start it's effects. For the first month, it's not really all the effective anyway (this is why they tell you to use another form of contraception if your sexually active). But, as I and someone mentioned, they have to legally give you at least one bathroom break. They can't make you sit there for up to 9 hours without doing so.

Re: Postponing period - May 7th 2011, 05:22 PM

Of course we get at least one bathroom break. But there are times during my period where I find myself having to my tampon (I use super plus) once an hour, which is obviously a whole lot. I, of course, can't wear pads on the test since the whole point of this post is to keep my period as secret and light as possible haha.

Jessy- Have you had any of the side effects from the Mefenamic acid? There is quite a list of them.

You can get tablets from your doctor that delay your period. You have to start taking them a few days before you are due on. I have had them before and they work.

Me and my mum both take it and neither of us have had any side effects, and I've found it really does work - got me through my GCSE mocks in one piece =)
