Tampon trouble? - May 17th 2011, 02:55 AM

Okay so, I have to do swimming for PE. And for some ridiculous reason, you only get 3 days off if you have your period. Mine lasts for a WEEK. That's a problem. I mean I would have to get a doctor's note but that's so much work so I'm deciding to use tampons. My friend gave me a lot so I can practice at home. So I did, but it didn't work out too well. I'm a virgin, but I thought it didn't matter. It hurt really bad. I'm pretty sure I'm putting it in the right hole. One time I did insert the tampon, but it hurt really bad. I tried leaving it in there, so I thought I would get used to it. But when I walked I could still feel it. I know you aren't supposed to to feel it, and that means you didn't put it in all the way, right? So I tried pushing it a little more, but it hurt really, really bad. So I took it out gently, but again, it hurt really bad. )X It's my first time too. My sister has never worn a tampon, and neither has my mom. It sucks.

Have you tried applying a little lubricant to the tampon applicator? It would help to reduce the friction and perhaps make your experience a little bit easier. Try and insert them as far as they will go. Trying to remove a tampon that isn't fully saturated can be painful and unpleasant, so the next time try to keep it in for longer before you remove it. :)

If you need, here is a guide to using your first tampon.
This is an eHow article on making the insertion process easier, simple things to consider such as positions, experimenting with different brands, etc.

If you aren't actually on your period, you don't have as much natural lubrication. I'd also suggest trying different brands and sizes. I know for me the only ones I find comfortable enough are U by Kotex. And even then, sometimes they get uncomfortable.

"'Colie, you should never be surprised when people treat you with respect. You should expect it.'
I shook my head. 'You don't know--' I began. But, as usual, she didn't let me finish.
'Yes,' she said simply, 'I do know. I've watched you, Colie. You walk around like a dog waiting to be kicked. And when someone does, you pout and cry like you didn't deserve it.'
'No one deserves to be kicked,' I said.
'I disagree,' she said flatly. 'You do if you don't think you're worth any better...'"

I'd suggest trying the smallest size first. I was worried about the first time inserting a tampon so I read the instructions that came with the pack, even then I still didn't feel like I knew how to do it so I asked my mum...
She told me to try and relax as much as possible, if you have tensed up muscles in that area, it'll become harder to insert and hurt more.
Also, try using tampax. It's made to make it easier for the first few times that you try.
You'll have to try different sitting and standing positions, one of them will work better than the others and make it easier on you. & if it hurts when it's in you and you can still feel it, then it's sitting tight or incorrectly inside.
Of course it will hurt for the first few times but over time you will get used to it. Taking it out will also be slightly painful.
I guess the five most important things to remember are, try different sitting and standing positions, start off using the smallest size tampon, try not to tense up and just relax instead, if you can still feel it inside try move it around a bit and of course you'll be dealt with pain for the first few times.
Good luck! Personally, I don't like them. I mean I will try them later on in the future but I'm sticking with pads in the meantime

Smaller size, lubricate, and remember, you won't have to have it in all day, just in the class. My body does not work well with tampons, I'm just naturally very petite and tight, so I only use them for times I need them.
You might want to look into different brands too. There are ones specifically made for teenagers, which are probably a smaller width and such.

Smaller sizes and brands would be your best bet. They have ones for light period flow, a regular period flow, a large period flow, and an extra large period flow. It tells you straight on the box. If you've never inserted tampons before, you most likely did do it wrong, and they come with directions straight in the box that explains how to insert it properly.

Plastic applicators were a big help for me when I first learned how to use them, I still prefer it over cardboard, remember to relax, being tense doesn't help at all!

Maddie took what I was going to say! I've found that plastic is much easier to insert than cardboard, but their drawback is that if you tense up while you're inserting them you'll push them right back out. Honestly I know exactly what you're going through; I used to HATE tampons, couldn't get them in, they weren't comfortable, constant worrying about Toxic Shock, etc. They take getting used to, but if you have a problem with the smell, they definitely make up for it once you get used to them. I remember the first few times I tried to use them; I never felt like they were going in right. They DO hurt a lot sometimes, but your uteris only goes one way, so if you feel like you're getting a lot of resistance and it hurts a LOT, adjust the angle. Sometimes, you'll get lucky and hit just the right angle and it'll slide right in. As others have said, use the smallest size you have available, and wear a liner for backup. When you go to take it out, try to pull it out at the same angle it went in, and if your liner has spots on it, you need to move a size up for flow.

So yeah, as others have said, plastic > cardboard, relax, use a small size at first. Go slow.
