When sufficient maturity comes coupled with a desire for sex. For some people, it can be in the teen years. For others, the maturity doesn't come about until much later, but it doesn't stop them. There's no definite age range, and it's silly to try to pin numbers to something so specific to the individual.

Personally, I think it depends on the mental maturity of the individuals in question. If both parties are mature enough to understand possible consequences, protection against those consequences, and -- most importantly -- are old enough to handle the consequences, I think it's alright.

Unfortunately, mental maturity doesn't always run the same as maturity in years. For instance, I know some 20+ year-olds who could not understand and deal with the consequences of sex; I also know some teenagers that can deal with (and have) dealt with the consequences of sex. And vice versa.

So, I don't believe I can vote, because I believe it depends on the maturity of both people involved.

Just to say, though: I'm fourteen, and probably not going to have sex any time in the near future. I know that I'd never be able to handle a baby and going to high school at the same time, and so I'm waiting until I've graduated and can deal with the consequences without my parents glaring at me for 'fornication' -- in other words, when I'm seventeen.

Your age ranges are far too widespread for me to pick one. I personally don't think people should have sex any younger than 17, but you've put the range as 14-18, and I definitely think a 14 year old having sex is just wrong.

It's an individual choice. There is no age people 'should' start having sex. I obviously wouldn't encourage people who are really young to start having sex but it happens.

to me, there isn't really a set age. According to my health text book, you people are normally physically mature enough to have sex between 12-16. It's a natural thing.

I agree. I think it's about mental maturity. When someone feels ready to have sex, and they feel as if they can handle the circumstances that sometimes come along with it, then I say, go for it.

I agree. I was completely not ready for sex at fourteen or fifteen and msot of sixteen, but by eighteen I was doing it every two days. There's a huge huge change between both ends of that age range so I don't really approve of how it's been placed on the poll.

The answer is that it differs for everyone. I have friends that were ready at fourteen, ready at sixteen, ready at eighteen. Obviously the ideal would be to be in love and in a relationship blahdy blahdy blah, but that's not how it works for everyone. There's no answer for this.

I personally find it hard to pick an age. The person should be in a committed relationship, and both partners should feel 100% ready for it. I'd have to say at least 20, but I'm more cautious with this topic than most people, so idk. :P

I'm not picking an age, since there isn't really one. It's about emotional maturity of the individual. I mean, sure, after puberty (obviously), but after the biological component of it, it's about emotional maturity and when one feels ready, and that varies too much for anyone to really be able to pick a poll answer.

We were both emotionally, mentally, and physically ready for it, in a very stable relationship, had a plan if our protection failed...age is honestly just a number...some 14 year olds aren't ready for sex. Just like some 18 year olds aren't ready either............

Personally, I think under 13 is way too young. People are just going through puberty and learning more about their body at that age.

But- I do think the age a person decides to have sex is their decision. I think having random sex for the first time at 15 is a little young to be out there, but if someone is in a good relationship and trusts them, then they make that decision.
