PID - a few questions. - June 23rd 2011, 03:49 AM

Okay, so lately, I've been having unbearable pain. A stabbing sensation, headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, bleeding... constantly, swollen/tender pelvic area, fever... the whole deal.
I went to visit my doctor today because I knew something was up and he put me on antibiotics for two weeks. Although the tests haven't come back, he at least knows it's PID.
And this is why I continue to hate my Paragard...

Now, I'm trying really hard to KEEP my damn IUD in. Why?
Well, 1. I can't take any other form of birth control. Because it just makes me sick. In every way possible. And me throwing them up every day is pretty much like me NOT taking a birth control at all. If I can't keep my Paragard, I'm out of options, other than condoms. And I'd prefer dual protection.
2. I got the thing in. It hurt. Badly. I've only had it for 5 months. I'd prefer to have it in the the other 9 years and 7 months that it's good for.

However, my gyno is clearly stating that if my antibiotics don't work, the thing is coming out and I don't get another one. Which... I mean, I'll do if I have to. After hearing 'You like your ovaries? You want to keep them or the Paragard?" I, obviously, will choose the ovaries if it comes to such.

I forgot to ask him questions, however, so:

1. Can PID infect your partner? Even if it's not STDs that caused it? We're both clean. It was definitely the IUD that was the opener for the bacteria. /: I'd like to give my boyfriend a warning to get checked, if I should. Would he be showing any symptoms though? Would the symptoms be any different for men, if they can get it?

2. This might be the dumbest question I'll ever ask, but can you still have sex with a PID? Obviously, if your partner can get it, the sex just isn't going to happen. But, as crappy as I feel, I feel like I might still be up for sex and I want to make sure I can or if I should just take the two weeks to relax and not be active. I tried looking this up and the only thing I saw was how you can get an PID from multiple partners. Which is not my case at all - or the answer to my question.

3. If I have a PID once, am I likely to get one again? I read somewhere that Paragard has a tendency to heighten your chances of them, but I also read that pamphlet a looong time ago and I'm getting mixed results from the internet. I'm pretty sure if I get another one, my doctor will pull the plug on this IUD.

PID, pelvic inflammatory disease is a general infection of the female reproductive tract, usually caused by untreated gonorrhea. Yes, it's contagious and if it goes untreated will cause sterility among other things. You should not have sex until the infection is gone.

And then you should use condoms with anyone you're not sure doesn't have an STD.

I hope you got it treated in time.

What just happened?

Quote:
PID often occurs from an untreated sexually transmitted disease such as GONORRHEA or CHLAMYDIA. It also may occur after childbirth, abortion, or miscarriage. Young, sexually active girls and those who use the intrauterine birth control device are at higher risk.
Quote:
PID is not contagious, but the bacteria that can lead to PID are highly contagious
Quote:
One case of PID does not confer immunity; it is possible to have many reinfections.

IUDs may be associated with an increased relative risk of PID compared to other forms of contraception and to no contraception.
I found my answers, I just thought I'd post them up.
Not that I didn't find yours helpful, but they seemed for STD causes and even failed to answer a question.
As I've state, me and my partner are clean/have been together for 16 months. It's not an STD, but a bad case of things going wrong. Admittedly, when I chose to abort, I didn't take all of the antibiotics they put me on afterward and when I had my IUD inserted months later, they never scheduled a check up, like they were supposed to.
So, really, I kinda had this coming to me and my uterus.

As you said though, I hope I decided to get help in time.
I got it placed 5 months ago and have felt like crap since, so I can't really tell when it started. I always assumed it was the IUD that made me feel terrible.

It looks like you've answered your own questions, so I can't offer any more but sympathy. I hope it clears up soon without you having to remove your IUD. I've got a Paragard and would be so damn pissed if they made me remove mine.

I'm not so great with advice. Could I interest you in a sarcastic comment instead?

It's an implant, if I'm not mistaken. A form of birth control that is inserted into the vagina. Here is a link with more info: http://www.paragard.com/

Well there's THE implant, Implanon, and there are IUDs. They are not similar in the way they are inserted and the way they function. To call an IUD an implant makes confusing and perhaps inaccurate, depending on the definition. It's inserted into the uterus to be more specific and it just stays within the uterus, it's not meant to be embedded.
