had unprotected sex, just a couple questions I guess. - September 2nd 2011, 12:53 AM

Wow. This would be my first thread back...but as they say, it's TeenHelp, I'm a teen, I could use some help. Kind of forgot how awkward it is to make this kind of thread though.

Anywho, my girlfriend and I have been dating on and off for 3 years (2.5 total) and today in the heat of things we had sex for the first time; basically I pulled out before I had an orgasm but like an idiot went back in after wiping it off...
It was the first day after her period, well, I guess it was day 8 because (and I could be wrong) I've heard that menstruation lasts a little longer than 7 days, I didn't finish in her, and I ran out immediately and bought an emergency contraceptive - "Next Choice" or something along those lines, she ingested it within a half hour of having sex.
I guess I just have a couple questions. I honestly don't think she's going to get pregnant - The fact that she shouldn't ovulate for a week plus the contraceptive obviously doesn't reduce the chance to zero but it is certainly extremely low, though she is obviously (and who could blame her) freaking out about it.
So...
1.) How likely do you think it is that she could be pregnant?
2.) When can I get her a pregnancy test and have it be accurate?
3.) Any advice on how to help her through this? Obviously I'm doing all I can in terms of the contraceptive and not ditching her or something stupid, but she's scared and I don't blame her, once you make yourself think you could be pregnant all your other fears kind of stack on top of that...

And, I don't know, it was consensual, she insists, but even though it didn't last very long at all (), idk, part of me feels like I, idk, raped her or something just by the way she freaked out after...I'm not sure what I'm getting at but any advice here would be wonderful too.
-Dan

Well, she's likely to have freaked out since it was her first time having sex. It's understandable, and you shouldn't worry about it. Don't feel as if you raped her. If she said yes, then it was definitely consented.

Now to get to your questions.

  1. While the chances of her becoming pregnant now are slim, there is ALWAYS chance of pregnancy when you have sex, protected or otherwise. You did the right thing by getting her the emergency contraceptive. She took it within the 72 hours it needs to be taken.
  2. You can get her a pregnancy test two weeks after the unprotected sex and it SHOULD be accurate. However, it's best to wait to see if she misses her next period. HOWEVER, you should note that since she DID take the emergency contraceptive, she MAY miss her next period. The contraceptive can make her period out of whack, and you should explain this to her so she doesn't freak and/or stress about it not showing up. However, around the time her next period should be rolling around, you can buy her a pregnancy test and have her take it. It needs to be taken in the morning, first THING in the morning, and an accurate result should come up.
  3. To help her through this, just continue to be supportive of her. Be her shoulder to cry on, the person she can vent too. That type of thing. Just remind her about the emergency contraceptive can make her periods out of whack and not to stress about it if it happens.
Hope this answered your questions.

Shannon answered perfectly I think

One thing I do feel the need to say, though, is (DON'T FREAK OUT!!!) depending on the age of your girlfriend, it may be classed as statutory rape (where you're above age of consent, but she's not, or vice versa.)

Quote:
Connecticut: The age of consent is 16. Children under the age of 13 who are having sexual contact must have an age difference of LESS than 2 years, for instance 12-11. People under the age of 16 can have sex with people who have an age difference OF two years or less (for instance 13-15).

You may want to suggest that she goes on birth control, such as the Pill [ http://www.teenhelp.org/forums/f6-se...rol-pill-pill/ ] so you don't experience a scare like this again.

Here's a list of other forms of contraception: http://www.teenhelp.org/forums/f6-se...contraception/ (but I do realise you probably know this :P I'm just giving you all the info.)

This is info about Next Choice: http://contraception.about.com/od/em...ext_Choice.htm

Okay, lots of links :P

Now to answer your questions:

1) Chances are very slim, considering she took the pill less than half an hour after intercourse and it's meant to be effective until 5 days afterwards (72 hours ideally.) So, it's very unlikely. However, as always with unprotected sex, it's possible.

2) I would wait until she's missed a period (IF she misses a period, that is.) Then, a pregnancy test will be accurate, and it won't be too late for an abortion, if you so choose. However, like Shannon said, it's important to remember and explain to her, that taking the morning after pill may mess up her menstrual cycle. It'll be back to normal eventually, but she might get her next period early, or late, or completely skip it. So if she hasn't got it by next month, take a test to be on the safe side.

3) Just support her. That's all you can do. But also tell her not to stress about it (stress can delay periods too.) It is HIGHLY unlikely she's pregnant, but I can't guarantee anything. Be a supportive boyfriend, and don't push her into sex having sex again too soon if she's not ready (not saying you pressured her, I mean don't suggest it for a while. No health dangers, but it might worry her, especially if this really bothered her.)

Best of luck! <3

Thanks for your responses (:
One more question - she's bleeding a little bit now, apparently as much as her first day of a period, but she's not due for another 3 weeks - I know bleeding can be a side effect but does that mean it worked?

Possibly. The pill can screw up her cycle, making it come earlier OR late. You'll just have to see if it turns into a full fledged period or not. Bleeding CAN occur during pregnancy, so also keep that in mind.

It's common for people having sex for the first time to be unprotected and pull out. Condoms are expensive and sometimes hard to get so teens often make do with what they have. More here: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/hea...ethod-4218.htm

It's not a reliable method, but your chances are much better if you pull out before you get close to ejaculating, not right before, and never go back in. It's also common for people to bareback a little as part of foreplay and put on the condom to finish, but be careful.

What just happened?
