No comfort. - September 5th 2011, 05:55 PM

Whenever I have my period I only use pads. Sometimes throughout the day at school I dont have the time to go the restroom and change. So I get irritation, and starts to burn. But on the sides . i dont have it right now, but its like I got a rash. Will it go away, or get worse with my next period?

If you are getting irritated from not changing, then you NEED to change it. Excuse yourself from class or go during lunch. Even if you aren't irritated yet, go when you are able and change it (even if it doesn't need changed).

It's likely the sweat causing irritation as it rubs against your skin. You could try narrower pads, tampons, or a different brand of pads. It may be an allergic reaction, but as I said, it is a bit hard to tell as sweat gathers there and irritates you. Wearing cotton underwear should help too, as it lets more air get through.

Re: No comfort. - September 5th 2011, 06:40 PM

Sometimes you have to make time to go and change it. I know that it can be difficult and a little bit embarrassing at times, but it's better for you to change it often. I think most pads the limit is 5 hours. I change mine like every 4 when I'm wearing them during the day.
I would also recommend trying tampons. They can be a little hard to get the hang of, but once you get it they're so much easier.
Good luck!

Re: No comfort. - September 5th 2011, 06:45 PM

I get irritated too, and the rash does normally go away after a few days.

However, recently, I've realised that using differemt shaped pads reduces how bad it is. So try different makes, as each person is different, and hopefully you'll find a style that suits you

Alternatively, you could try tampons. I advise that, as it's much cleaner and doesn't need changing as often.

Take care <3

Is that because your mum thinks you need to have had sex to use tampons? If so, then that isn't true. You can use them regardless of whether or not you've had sex. I think you can use them for longer then pads so you don't have to worry about not being able to change them due to being in class and they won't cause as much irritation as a pad would but if you can't, as others have said though, if your pads are causing you irritation then you need to change them more often then you currently do or consider changing to a new brand/shape of pad to see if that helps.

You do not need to ask the doctor before using tampons..
They're an option for everyone regardless of whether or not you've had sex.
It could be that she's concerned you could break your hymen, but I don't think that would really happen because of tampon use.
They also make really small/slender tampons so you could try those first.

Even with tampons, they have to be changed every 4-6 hours. They aren't permanent during the day, they still need to changed. If you don't, you could risk the chance of getting TSS or Toxis Shock Syndrome, and believe me it's not fun as I had it once when I was younger.

You need to FIND time to change your tampon or pad. Even if you're embarrassed about it, you need to ask your teachers to excuse you from class to change it.

Re: No comfort. - September 6th 2011, 01:32 AM

Some pads are made with softer, more "cottony" materials than others. I find those to be a lot less irritating in texture than the Always pads, the one with the plastic-y surface. If it's chafing at the sides, you can try cutting the pad around the edges so it'll fit onto your underwear better without rubbing your skin.

Changing your pad doesn't take that long. The actual process takes less than a minute, maybe a few to get in and out of the bathroom. Are you certain you don't have any time in your day to set aside going to the bathroom? You may feel as though you're busy but I'm certain you can find a little time in your schedule to go to the bathroom, even if is during your lunch break.

You may also want to consider using alternative menstrual products, such as tampons, sea sponges, or menstrual cups. The latter two work something like tampons in that they are meant to be used internally, which would solve your irritation problems altogether. There is nothing scary about using internal menstrual products as long as you use them properly. You don't need to have had sex to be menstruating, so why would anyone create products like that? You may not be completely familiar with your body since you don't have much sexual experience, but aside from the slight learning curve and perhaps a little bit of difficulty, you are free to use whatever menstrual products you prefer.

My mother didn't like the idea of tampons either. She had very little experience with them when I first asked her about it. I was curious in exploring my options so one day I went out to make my first purchase. She eventually caught on and I was confronted about it, but it turned out to be no big deal. She told me that I should have told her that I wanted to use them in the first place. Now she's using them herself, while I have finally settled on using a menstrual cup as my go-to option.

If you can't change your pad because you school has a no washroom break rule, drop the lfemale prroblem" line to your teacher, and they always let you go. I use this all the ttime, and have never been denied a washroom brreak. Your teachers teach tons of teenage girls everyday, they won't make a big deal out of itm

In class Im too shy to go since I would have to take a pad out of my backpack where people could see. In breaks its because of my frends and I dont like sayin I have to go to the restroom even when Im off my period I wait til I get home even if I really have to go.

My mom says the tampon could break wutever it is thats there, I want to try a tampon but Im scared to see how it works.

Re: No comfort. - September 7th 2011, 02:05 AM

What can a tampon possibly break? The vaginal canal is only a few inches long in length and ends at your cervix. You can't possibly lose a tampon inside you. The most you can do is cause tiny little tears on the walls of your vaginal canal if you pull out a tampon that hasn't been saturated. Unpleasant, but not awful.

What I do is carry around a little bag to put my menstrual products in. A makeup bag works just fine and it is nondescript. No one will see it then so you can have your privacy.

You don't have to tell your friends that you're going to the bathroom either. Just ask to be excused for a moment. You don't really need their permission either, so what's stopping you from just getting up and leaving? Using the restroom is not something embarrassing. It is absolutely natural and totally fine. Lots of your friends must be menstruating by now given your age, so I'm sure they'll likely be more than understanding.

Agree with Sylvie.

Another thing, is your mother meaning breaking your hymen? I really don't think tampons can do this. But at the same time, you can break your hymen riding a bike or a horse. That isn't really the definition of virginity in this day and age, and there is nothing really wrong with this.

But I would just recommend continue wearing pads, but discretely finding a way to carry them with you. Just take your backpack with you to the bathroom, that's what I do. If somebody asks, say you don't trust people not stealing your books or iPod or something. (My mp3 player got stolen, it's a perfectly good excuse!) You can also keep your pads in your locker and quickly visit your locker before a bathroom visit.

Good luck!

It isn't a rash. It's called chaffing, baby power will make it go away and make the irritation go away. But change your pad before it happens and there is no problem.

You need to change it if it's irritating. But tampons are much better as you don't get this problem.

But if they really aren't an option, you must get out of class somehow, just go up to your teacher and say "may I use the bathroom please?" if they say no just (like another poster said) "well, female problems, could I use the bathroom?"

xx

And just to ease your worries. A tampon cannot possibly "break" anything O.O Not going to lie, the first time you try will be awkward and you may go through several before you get there but after that it's really easy

You've got to change it. I got a UTI from not changing my pads enough, and trust me that is something you DO NOT want to experience.

UTI = Urinary Tract Infection.

It's really uncomfortable, can cause burning during urination, and could lead to health problems later on if it goes untreated, whether you treat it yourself or by a doctor.

Here is a website you can use to read all about UTI's and how to prevent them.
http://health.howstuffworks.com/dise...ts-to-know.htm

Also, a tampon COULD break the hymen, which is the thin layer of skin covering the vagina. This happens when you have sex, or when you wear tampons, go horse back riding or even doing exercise or a sport. You could have broken your hymen now, but wouldn't even know.

They aren't hard to put in, you just need to find the right tampon on for you. If you buy a box of them, they come with instructions and I suggest you read them thoroughly before giving them a try.

Tampons on fairly easy to put in. The first time is the hardest. :P So you might go through a couple of them.

The instructions are very helpful. Also, tampons come in different sizes suchs as "regular, super" etc. This depends on how heavy your periods are. Getting the least for if you have light periods, regular for a regular period and supers for heavy periods.

There are also different types. My preference is Tampax Pearl, or any offbrand that is like Pearl. I find them most comfortable. They are fairly inexpensive, given one box of 40 can last you a few months and generally only around $5.

Your mother doesn't need to ask your doctor. The majority of girls who are trying tampons for the first time are still virgins. She might just feel a little unsure about using tampons herself but I don't think you should let it get to you ~ my mum doesn't like using tampons, which means that now I'M not too comfortable using tampons, and I wish I was. As for changing pads in school ~ the longer you leave them in the less comfortable it'll be. Can you slip a pad discreetly into your pocket before you go to the bathroom?? If not your friends won't mind of you need to slip off to the bathroom ~ it's a basic human need for feck's sake.

You're mom does not need to ask anyone if it's okay for you to use tampons, trust me.
They might be a little weird to get used to at first, honestly it probably took me like..15 tries before I got it exactly right. And then I felt superior.
It's not that bad though, and they're so much more convenient than pads.

If it were to happen, it could hurt a little bit, but it also might not. The only thing you'd feel would be slight pain.

But your hymen might already be broken and you just don't know it.

Same

They are not hard to do once you can, if that makes sense. Like said, you may get through a few before suceeding

Might sound minging but if you can feel it or it's uncomfertable... push it further it can't get lost!
