What criteria do you need to fit to go on the pill for periods? - September 10th 2011, 03:55 PM

Well basically, my periods are crappy and irregular and heavy and really awful

I've posted here before about this, but this question's a bit different.

Basically, would a doctor actually prescribe me birth control? I'm 15, not sexually active. I was just wondering how bad your periods actually have to be to be prescribed it? Because I don't want to go, and be like "I want to go on birth control," for them to be like "Don't be silly, you're nowhere near as bad as you need to be for a prescription. Go home child." Well obviously, they wouldn't say that, but you get the gist, and it would be really embarrassing

Here's some info about my cycle (I have a super cool iPod app!)

Apr 5 - May 15. Cycle length 40 days. Period length 8 days.
May 15 - Jun 9. Cycle length 25 days. Period length 7 days.
Jun 9 - Jul 8. Cycle length 29 days. Period length 8 days.
Jul 18 - Aug 14. Cycle length 37. Period length 7 days.

So there's really no regularity at all.
It's supposed to predict my next period, but is always totally out. Like, it says my next one should be in 3 days, but I don't have any of the normal symptoms. I just feel more regularity would be so welcome. Obviously I don't expect it to predict anything, because a swing from 40 to 25 days is beyond normal, surely?

I've had them for nearly 3 years I think, and I know they don't usually reguate til much later, but I don't think I can cope with them being this irregular for another 5 years. Plus, my mum's have always been irregular, and she's 42 And apparently girls take after their mums... so yeah. Not looking good.

Sooo do you think I 'qualify' for birth control? I mean, I'm sure they don't hand out pills like candy

It really depends on the doctor prescribing you the pills. If your cycle is really irregular and your mum's is too, your doctor may be likely to put you on the pill for a while to see how that works for you! There's no harm in giving it a try, right? :)

Well, for me, I was put on the pill before I was sexually active as well. My periods weren't irregular and they weren't bad either, but my mom thought it was a good time for me to go on the pill since I was getting into my first serious relationship with my then boyfriend, Justin, who was also the person I lost my virginity too after I was put on the pill.

I'm sure if you explain to your doctor everything you've mentioned here along with the fact that you aren't sexually active, they'll put you on the pill to help regulate your periods. I don't really think you have to meet any sort of 'criteria' to be put on the pill.

It really just depends what you want the birth control for. I was prescribed birth control originally for acne, but I'm on the same birth control for sex. They take into account the possible side effects, if you want your period every month, & how affordable it is. Your cycle wouldn't determine the birth control you get.
