Umm..Tampons? - September 16th 2011, 12:41 AM

So like I just started my period March of 2010 (I was 11) and since then I've been using pads only (and also because my mom won't let me use them until I'm 16 and she thinks I'll hurt myself).
I was just wondering like how do you use one, I've seen a diagram on how to insert one () but it doesn't make sense to me Doesn't it like hurt or something?
Blah sorry I'm just so confused because during the summer I've been wanting to go swimming but I'd be on my period and then I'd be all pissed off because it's hot outside and people are swimming.
HBFLIREYRUBKRHUWI I'm so full of questions
Can you go swimming with a tampon in if you're on you period?
I guess that's all.

Inserting a tampon is pretty simple.

Wash your hands before you unwrap the tampon. Depending on the tampon you will be using, there are different ways of going about this. The plastic applicators are the easiest to insert since they go in smoothly. Insert the applicator into your vagina, keeping in mind that the vagina is shaped so that it goes upward at an angle. Push the end of the applicator in and what I like to do is give it a little nudge afterwards so that I can make sure it is in as far as it will go. If the tampon sits too close to the front of your vagina it can be very uncomfortable.

In terms of pain, I don't know what you will experience. Some girls find it painful but with a little patience and perhaps even a bit of lubrication, you should be fine. It might also help to squat while you insert it- find something that works for you.

You can definitely go swimming in a tampon or any other internal menstrual product, for that matter. It's always good to ask questions if you have any. Don't worry, we've all been there. :)

Hope this helps. x

Hey there
Basically Angel stole the words from my mouth.
I would like to add: keep in mind the size of your vaginal opening.
Using the wrong size tampon can contribute to discomfort and pain.
Seeing as you're younger, I imagine that you're probably small, so get the smaller size.
I'm nineteen and I still need the small sized tampons (if I ever used tampons).
I've always found lubricant to be irritating to my skin a bit, so maybe try a water based lubricant (much easier on the skin, while still having the same affect)

Who know, you may never get used to tampons. I never did. But then again, you may like them so much that you use them all the time. I use pads mostly, with the occasion of swimming.

Oh and I might add when I was 6 and 7 I had 2 vaginal surgeries to re-open my opening because the doctors said it was closing If that will effect anything at all (I don't think it will)

Hmmm I doubt that it would affect anything. So, your vagina is naturally more small?
I think it's most important to lubricate and find the right size to prevent discomfort, as there could potentially be more with you.

No problem!
Just takes some trial and error.
Good luck <3

Just practice. I know it took me a while to figure it out, but it really isn't too hard. Don't fret if you don't get it right away. I've been using them forever since I prefer them to pads, but my sister has never used tampons. It's really about what's most comfortable.

It took me a while to get the hang of it, but now I prefer tampons so much more than pads. They're much less icky. (Apart from at night of course.)

Start with the smallest size, as they're easiest, but then you can start with bigger sizes.

It may be worth talking to your mum about wearing them, even if it is just for the occasion of swimming, or sport in school. It would be quite difficult to cause yourself significant harm from a tampon.

Good luck!<3

Yeah, just find what you prefer. I hated pads so much I switched to tampons on the first day But I'm propper heavy, so sometimes I need to wear a pantyliner JIC of leaking I can't wear bigger tampons as they dont,er, fit

Basicly WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER. I'm paranoid for germs so I also use Anti-bac gel But ya don't need to.
The get one from the box, I use Lil lets, they don't have the patented applicator like Tampax do, but they are very small so ultra easy.
Remove the wrapper and give the string a tug to check it's secure (it;s never loose tho)
Then FIND WHAT WORKS. Squat, leg on loo, leg on bathtub, upside down with your legs in the air
Hold the Tampon with yout thumb and finger and another finger at the bottom. Now gllliiiddddeeee. try pushing it towards your butt, it helps
Then if you can still feel it, just push it further, it wont get lost

I was terrified to wear tampons for at least 4 years. I was 12 when I started my period and I'm now (almost) 18. I think I started using tampons when I was in the 10th grade. And although it took a lot of practice to feel ok with using them, I now feel like tampons are a lot more comfortable for me. It's all about preference and practice.

I deffinetly perfer tampons to pads, there so much easier, and cleaner. The most important thing to remember is to relax. If your relaxed it will be easier to insert. If your all nervous and tense it might hurt alittle. Usually the box will have instructions in it too, along with some commonly asked questions. Sometimes its good to have it on hand when you first do it just in case.

Make sure that you're definitely on your period before you try putting one in. If you're just spotting and there isn't enough lubrication, it'll hurt. A lot. And when you pull it out, make sure that you pull it out at the same angle you put it in. If you just yank on the string it'll hurt too. Just be really careful. Oh, and make sure that you change the absorbency of the tampon as needed throughout your period. You might need one with a higher absorbency at the beginning of your period and then ones with a little less as it goes on. If the absorbency is too high and you end up taking it out while it's still mostly dry, the feeling is horrendous.

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote,
“Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything.
He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."
