TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) - September 16th 2011, 09:50 PM

Last week i came on and i normally use pads, but they aren't hygiene so to speak when your on the move constantly,so after i bathed the other morning i decided to use a tampon,i've only ever tried wearing one a few times but they hardly felt comfortable so i was inserting them wrong, but i've just given up on using them.

well i decided to use one tuesday after i bathed and it was all okay couldn't feel anything but i sat on the sofa and about hardly 10mins later i had real pains in my stomach (i'd just ate a sandwich before i had the bath) so i thought maybe its from the sandwich i bought, but then all of a sudden i felt dizzy, sick my stomach was just in utter pain as if i needed to be sick or the other end, like trapped wind,i spent 30mins sat on the bathroom floor because i felt like i was going to faint,i was breaking out in hot flushes aswell.
My sister asked if i was using one and she said to take it out,so i did,and i still felt woozy ect, well i was drinking water and lead on the sofa for 20mins and i dropped off to sleep for a couple of mins (light sleeping i could hear everything going on in the living room) and my pains started to go and i started to feel okay..

Well i will admit i was paranoid, checked online about it and the symptoms matched,i've booked an appointment for next tuesday with the nurse..

My problem is,its caused from a bacteria or something, but tuesday morning i'd be to the dentist, then to have my eyes checked,i was wondering if i could of picked something up form being in all those places,im still not 100% sure of what it actually means the whole TSS just that its a bacteria on the skin or up the nose.

Just thought id post this to see if anyone have ever had this?

I experienced Toxic Shock Syndrome when I first began using tampons when I was around 14-15 years old. Toxic Shock Syndrome is mostly contracted when you've worn a tampon too long. Tampons require that you change them every 4-6 hours, depending on the sort of tampon you were using (on the package, it will inform you when to change the tampon). That was my issue. The only thing that I got was a terrible rash all over my body and a fever.

I'm not sure what you've experienced was TSS. It could be something else completely. You may have been having an allergic reaction to the tampon itself, seeing as when you removed it, you started to feel better. The best thing would be to bring up everything with the doctor when you go and see them.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like your symptoms match TSS at all. You didn't have a fever or a rash, which are two of the most common symptoms (in fact, I believe you can't be diagnosed with TSS without those symptoms). Also, TSS is a very serious condition - you wouldn't have recovered so quickly and, most likely, would have been hospitalised. It's not really something that can be checked several days later; it needs to be treated immediately.

To me, it sounds like you didn't insert the tampon correctly. You said that you couldn't feel it after putting it in, but perhaps when you sat down, it moved or because you were sitting in a different position, it was now uncomfortable. I've had the same thing happen before - I couldn't feel the tampon when standing, but if I moved a certain way, then it was very painful and made me feel quite dizzy. It also stopped after I removed the tampon.

Since the symptoms went away quickly and you've not experienced them again, it's unlikely that you have anything to worry about. But maybe stick to using pads from now on, since it definitely sounds like the tampon was the cause of the problem.

It doesn't sound like TSS, but I guess it could be.
As ShimmeringFaerie said, sounds like you inserted it wrong, that can cause stomach pains. I always prefer to use ones plastic applicators (not even cardboard ones) they're much easier to insert properly as the applicator places them for you.
Did you look up symptoms before it happened or as soon as you got the pain, but if that's what happened it's possible the symptoms were psychosematic ... when I first used tampons I was SUPER paraoid and I often felt dizzy etc using them, only after I spoke to a doctor about it and she reassured me it wasn't TSS did the symptoms stop.

You can't move mountains by whispering at them.

I think her point was that TSS doesn't just go away like that, you need medical treatment for it.

Sometimes a tampon can shift and we may not actually feel it, but you can experience pains from it. Also, were you nervous when you were putting it in? Sometimes people get nervous and their muscles tighten up. So when you insert it, then relax, the tampon moves just enough to wear it may change position without you knowing until it's angled the wrong way, causing pain.

I'd suggest practicing with mini-tampons and maybe using vaseline.

I also agree, TTS symptoms would stay with you until treated, so it's very unlikely the symptoms were due to that.

So you have gray hair and you're only 26

that's just another reason I love you...
