Is this normal? - September 19th 2011, 03:26 PM

I started birth control in July, and I was instructed by my doctor to take two packs, consecutively, and then carry on taking the birth control as normal. I did not have a period for August, and cannot remember if I had one for July (if I did, it would have been at the beginning of the month). I have finished up my second pack of birth control and am now on the third or fourth day of taking the white sugar pills. I still have not gotten my period, and I was wondering if this was normal?

I have been sexually active but seeing as I took my birth control same time every day as instructed and seeing as he never finished inside etc., I'm not at all worried I could be pregnant. I'm simply curious as to why I haven't gotten my period yet. It's possible that I skipped September's period as well, if my period decided to come at the beginning of the month - it's extremely irregular throughout the year, a part of why I'm on the BC - but that doesn't quite make sense to me. I guess I'm just confused/concerned as to why I haven't gotten my period yet? Does this mean it may come while I'm on BC? Which stopped my period completely through August?

EDIT: I take Apri, if that helps.

There are 7 sugar pills correct? It's normal. It just depends on the month. Sometimes, I get my period on the third day of the sugar pill. Other times, I get it on the 6th day of the sugar pill. If you don't get your period this month, don't worry too much. Everyone is different, and this could just be your body getting used to the birth control. If it truly worries you, contact the doctor who administered the pill to confirm.

I'm not too worried yet - I think I'd wait until if I skipped my second, for example, to worry - but yes, there are 7 sugar pills. I read some more online, too, and some people don't get them until later in the pack like you said. It's also the first time I'm supposed to have my period while on BC, so I thought of the adjustment period as well. I think I'm primarily anxious because the oh-so-fun PMS has returned with a vengance - I tend to get incredibly suicidal-type depressed, which is what my doctors and I are currently working on to prevent - and the depression lifts with the first day or two of my period, so I really, really want it to come already.

Thank you for your response!

If your period is extremely irregular thoughout the year, then your body is having to work a bit harder to adjust to the birth control. Which is normal. I'm extremely irregular as well. I'm on birth control, and have been for three months. Its still a bit irregular. Once I started during the month, when I still had a week until my sugar pills. I would wait it out and see what happens. I think your body is going to take a while to adjust. Which is fine. But in a month or two, if you're still having irregular periods.. I would contact your doctor. And if you continue a few weeks without a period.. id take a pregnancy test or contact your doctor, just to be safe.

It sounds perfectly normal. My period normally starts on day 2, 3, or 4 of the sugar pills, but there are plenty of girls who don't get theirs until later in the week. Plus if you are experiencing PMS, then I think it's reasonable to assume that your period will start soon.

If you don't get it by the end of the sugar pills, however, I would definitely think about going back to the doctor. I think it would be better to check now and see if something is wrong rather than waiting a whole extra month.

Thank you both!

I just took the 4th pill today, so we'll see what happens. Another question I have though, if my period starts on one of the last/later sugar pills, do I continue taking the normal pills even if I'm on my period? Thanks!

You're welcome

And to answer your question- yes! Take your pills as directed no matter what.
