Angry Period during Duke of Edinburgh... - October 3rd 2011, 05:28 PM

Crap,

Well. On the 16th/17th October I'm doing the expedition section of my Duke of Edinburgh award. For those of you who don't know what it is, it's a horrible experience where you have to walk for 6 hours, carrying all your stuff for overnight on your back, camp overnight, and walk for another 6 hours the next day. I've already done 1 expedition, but my second one is later this month.

I've just figured out that I'll probably be on my period during those two days, and it'll be the early days of my period where it's super heavy and I need to change my tampon every 1-2 hours.

Now, that I could cope with.

HOWEVER.

You're not allowed to use toilets while walking. You can use the ones on the campsite overnight if there are any (which, thank god, there are,) but I don't know WHAT I'm going to do during the 12 walking hours... Any suggestions?

Well, you could try to use those overnight maxi pads which are supposed to last 8 hours. Change right before and after? Other than that I don't realy have any ideas

What a shame, what a shame
To judge a life that you can't change
The choir sings, the church bells ring
So won't you give this man his wings?
What a shame to have to beg you to
See we're not all the same, what a shame

You could try asking if you may use the bathroom during the walks, since there is always an exception, like this one.

Or you could wear a long lasting pad instead of a tampon.

I may wear the glass slippers; But my hero wears combat boots <3 I love you, Lieutenant

Yeah, I think using thick pads would be your best bet but as Shannon said try talking to them and see what they say.

Personally, I hate pads and I think walking one would be horrid so not gonna go with that one. I would ask about an exception because of it, your group would also have to know.
Other than that, and believe me I know this sounds super gross, you might have to take them with you. Get the heaviest tampons you can in the hope of changing less often, and some nappy bags. Each time you change have wetwipes with you to freshen up and put the tampon in a nappy bag and knot it up. The bag stops them from smelling etc. You can dispose of the bags when you finally come to toilets. I know it might sound awful, but I had to on a campling trip once and it wasn't as bad as I expected :/

You can't move mountains by whispering at them.
